My God I am SO sorry that this has happened.
I cant help but be angry that this has happened because it was TOTALLY PREVENTABLE! It didnt have to happen!
With that being said.....he needs MAJOR jail time. I also wish he would have been forced to view the victims he left behind. Lives are forever changed and my God...I cannot even begin to comprehend what the families are left to deal with.....for the remainder of their lives.
My hormones may have been raging when I was 17...but I still knew the difference between right and wrong. And no, there may have been no malice involved, but we have laws in place for all to follow for a reason. Period. Being 17 does not excuse him from those laws.
I cannot even begin to convey how sorry I am for what your family must be going through. Just please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers

Thanks, but it's a closed hearing because of his age. Only family.

How are you doing on your letter? I can't imagine having to go through this, I wish you were closer. I didn't win the mega millions so I cant send you a plane ticket this week. lol!

Letters had to be rewritten. We thought we were to write them directed to 'him', but we were told they had to be written to the Judge. So we had to go back and change all of the ''You did this, You did that, etc...'' to ''he did this, he did that, etc....".
My mom finished hers and sent it out yesterday. I'm still working on mine. Every time I think I'm done, I come up with something else to say. Plus, I still have friends sending me comments that I'm adding to it.........so if anyone wants to say anything here for me to add, please do. I will definitely be sending mine on Monday.
Trial is still scheduled for Feb 10..........we still can't make it, but several members from the other woman's family will be there. (We've been keeping in contact with one of the daughters)

I'm sorry for you loss. This is the first time I have actually read through this although I know it has been here a while now.
To me if you kill someone while DUI I think you should get the the same jail time as a murderer. No, he didn't plan to kill a person but the person drinking knows they shouldn't be drinking and driving. That person doesn't care about anyone but themselves.
I also think if you are in a accident and hurt someone while DUI then you should do jail time and pay the medical bills for the person injured.

I am sorry for your loss. I have never been in this type of situation so I truly wouldn't know what kind of comments to add. I did have a cousin in law go through this w/ her mother. It was sad, she drove by the accident not having a clue who it was but saw her mothers shoe and knew immediately what it was. The judge actually allowed her to choose his punishment (I guess from a list of stuff they were allowed to use in that state). She could have chose a very lengthy jail sentence but she decided to make him do years worth of community service in the morgue and do speeches at schools about it. I'm not sure what the right punishment is... any way around it, a lot of lives are devastated by it.

Hearing is today at 1pm MT.
The DA called my mom last night and told her that he is going to plead guilty. (He doesn't really have much of a choice considering it's caught on video). I just hope that him pleading guilty doesn't lessen his sentence.
Trial will be in 7-8 weeks. Some time after Easter. As of right now, I won't be able to make it. (Unless that winning Powerball ticket comes through, lol). I don't know if my mom will be able to go either. It's kinda sooner than we had hoped.
If there's any more news after the hearing today, I'll post it.
ETA: The date for the sentencing will be Friday, April 13th.
