A virus protection program took over my computer

It wouldn't let me use internet explorer, or retore my computer or run a virus scan or anything. It kept saying my computer was infected and I needed to buy their program. It wouldn't let me say no I didn't want it. My husband reinstalled windows and internet explorer and it seems to have gotten rid of it. I hate it when something takes control of your computer especially when they're trying to force you to buy their program or they wont let you be able to use your computer. Someone needs to report them to someone.

Just a suggestion - quit using internet explorer. It is the easiest for hackers to get through. Download and try Mozilla Firefox. It is really easy to use and works better.

It might be a virus that calls itself AV software. To totally get rid of it you should download Malwarebytes antimalware. And definitely switch browsers-we use mozilla firefox.

well that sucked LOL, I went and downloaded the malwarebytes, it was a free download, then I scanned my computer, and it came up with all these problems, then said it couldn't fix it unless I purchased the program...... oh well

There is a free version. I think I googled 'Fake AntiVirus' and it led to a page with how to fight it and the MalwareBytes I downloaded was free.

I always used IE because it was on my PC. When I had all the trouble with it this summer my PC guy to switch to Mozilla Firefox because it is definitely safer.
I am completely computer illiterate but am learning (mostly my boys-22,18,15-are helping me while rolling their eyes)

I'll have to look around later and find it, I'm sure there is a free version out there, this is the site that I downloaded it from though, and then ran it and I couldn't do anything with it because I had to purchase it...

You can download the 2 following programs from www.cnet.com and get them for free and they are excellent. spybot and adawareSE. They find the stuff that your antivirus doesn't get. I would bet that the program that hit her looked like AVG. I have had 2 different bosses download it thinking it was a update of AVG. Needless to say they now don't click on anything until they ask me.

I didn't get it by clicking on an email I was playing a mahjong game that my husband put on my computer for me a long time ago. A box popped up saying I had a virus from this program and it began a scan my computer. After that it kept saying I needed to buy the program to protect my computer. It disabled my virus preotection program so it wouldn't let me scan to get rid of it, messed up internet explorer where I would get a message from internet explorer saying it would ruin my computer if I used internet explorer, it wouldn't let me restore anything because it disabled the restore function where I couldn't go back to when I didn't have it on my computer. Thankfully my husband fixed it. And it also messed up my mahjong game where I couldn't get it to work anymore either. It was something called Antivir something program. A virus protection program. It had a site I could go to buy it. I can't remember the middle word in it.
