It is getting scary out there isn't it?
I can't find anything and I have seen so many of my friends lose their jobs and houses. We are managing but he just got laid off for a week last week, They said one week on and one week off all summer, so we will see how that goes. My part time job, babysitting the grand daughter doesn't pay the bills.
I wish everybody the best of luck with job hunting because I know how frustrating it really is!
And if you have a job, keep it!
Michigan is starting a program to find jobs for all these 16 - 24 year olds. I am pissed about that... what about all us 40 year olds that are losing our asses?

I fell your pain. I have been out of work since March. Can't even been able to land a face to face interview! One staffing company called and asked me to come in saying they had a job for me to interview for. I get all dressed, skirt, heels the whole bit. When I got to the staffing place, the very young girl took one look at me and said something to the effect of "that job isn't hiring, the person in charge put a hold on things. We'll call you if we get anything." To me it felt like discrimination. Ok, so I'm not 20-something and I dont' have the figure of a model, but I do have alot of experience and great references. Grrrrr! This is so frustrating for all of us!

It always gets worse before it gets better, I am hoping and praying the economy gets better. I am currently employed, just got the job, and my hours were cut today by 10, dropping me from 40 hours a week to 30

I always sent Thank You notes following any interview I had. I was told that was the main reason I was hired for my job. I was the only person who sent out of the 2 dozen that they interviewed that sent a note.
The note made me memorable in their eyes.

let me give you a little tip that might lead to more interviews. I know some won't agree and some might even get mad, but in this day and age with affirmative action and discrimination issues. I've seen people do this and fill out an application with the same companies and half gave them an interview with the second application.. and he ended up with one of the jobs. this works better with the larger companies
now some applications have a place to check "RACE" even if they aren't supposed to anymore.. if they do, and you are caucasian, check "other" and put european american, irish american or something like that.. i've seen it work

I agree with this completely. One thing I always look for when interviewing a prospective employee is did they do their homework. Do they ask questions about our company and seem genuinely interested in what we do and how we do it. Have concrete answers to questions, don't tell me that you will help us become more efficient instead have a plan or an idea as to how you can make that happen.
Maybe you could do a practice interview w/someone and they can give you some pointers on how better to present yourself. Sometimes others can easily spot things that we don't see. And no matter what the position dress business professional for the interview. It shows me that you are serious and not taking the opportunity lightly.
Good luck it is tough out there right now, but I'm sure you will find something soon.

Thank you all for the great advice. I do send thank you notes. I remember I really appreciated them when I was interviewing people.
I have been going thru websites of companies, seeing what is out there and just mailing in my resumes. Most of them do not have jobs listings but I sent them in anyway. Guess What??? I got a call today from one of them. They do not have a job open right now but want me to come in on Monday for an interview!!! Right now I am learning all there is to know about this company so I am prepared!
Tonight I am going to practice interviewing with a neighbor. She is an HR director for a large company so I am sure she will give me good solid feedback on my interviewing skills.
