Actually, I think many people are cutting back. I work for Disney and attendance at the theme parks is way down. It is obvious why. People don't have the extras to pay for the tickets, food, souveniers, as well as gas to get there.

So, while people are managing smaller activities, perhaps...a lot of the big stuff has been cut out.

Well for me and my family we save money for the things we want to do. We had money saved before the things got so bad. I plan my trips way in advance if possible. Expedia now has an option to pay half up front and the other half before u leave...only if you plan so far in advance.

I planned my New York trip with my daughter 3 months in advance. It gives you plenty of time to search for deals. It helps that me and my husband both work. All of our bills stayed payed and we still can afford a few extras. Get on a budget and stick to it.

My Mexico trip that I leave for soon is a family trip so the cost are split. Very reasonable.

I don't use credit cards...soo..I don't get that concept. The intrest is not worth it to me.

Some people may not pay their bills in order to be able to travel..but I put bills and such first. With proper planning..you can make it happen.

i personally don't care if anyone takes trips, when or where, I just hate the ones talking about how much they spent for this and that, and they went out and ate here and bought this... then the next week they are on here talking about how they aren't going to make their bills...... I know i have to go to to TN 4 times a year, want to or not... I make the scarafices i have to, to make sure i have that money.... Yeah i've griped on here a few times bout certian bills, the bank screwed me over once, and my cars have broken down.. I know that happens, and i find a way.... but taking trips and braggign about them,, then wondering how you're gonna make your bills I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND......

I can't agree more. Also add those who complain about not being able to "afford" Back to School, Christmas, birthdays or whatever. You know those days are coming so why dont you plan ahead?

We took our first cruise ever this year - with a family of 5 believe me it was very expensive. This was my DH's family reunion (due to volume we got a pretty good group discount), he started a much better paying job last year but this was quite a stretch for us. If they had done this 2 years ago, we would not have even been able to consider it. DH kept saying that maybe we couldn't do it, but I was determined. I told him that I have done without for many years, don't ask for much & make sure that everyone else has, even if I get nothing (typical mom stuff), but I was giong on this cruise!
We made the sacrifices, scrimped & saved and although we couldn't afford many of the 'extras' on the cruise, like excursions & over prices photos, we still went on shore & made our own day trips- some of which were even better than what some people paid for (according to some horror stories).
I would love to be able to afford another cruise, but if it doesn't happen, this is one memory that our family will have forever.
I know that this was not the best fiscal decision ever made, but boy was it great pschologically.

Ok guys, let me make myself clear, I definitely don't begrudge anyone a good time, and I am not jealous or complaining about the people who do get to go, really. I know some of you are apparently referring to certain people on the boards who are at one end of the spectrum then suddenly at the other, which I totally know is not me,lol. And we are planning on doing some stuff too, that is not the best financial decision for us right now, but we are going to do it anyway, my niece is getting married and we are going to be there.
What I am getting at is some people who and maybe not even on here persay, I am referring more IRL where I am seeing people going on big trips 4 and 5 times a year, I just am wondering "what am I doing wrong?" lol!!
So please don't think I am shunning anyone who goes, I was just wondering what everyone else around the globe was noticing. And saving is hard also, scouring the internet for deals, coupons, etc. I know how much time that takes. I have much more time to do it when I am off work (summers) but not as much time Sept-June. lol

Haven't vacationed in about 4 years, but took a weeks trip to New York from Georgia last week. There were no internet deals. Gas was higher up there, but I bought all the neccesities before we left. But thank goodness my son wanted us to stay with him! We bought an airmattress and was perfectly content. If we hadn't , there wouldn't have been much left for extras.

Our only vacation this yr was to my in laws summer home-we go there a few times a yr. Thats basically free except for gas and food. We also went to Wisconsin Dells in June but that trip was planned/booked and saved for last yr. I got any awesome deal because I booked it in Nov of last yr. Otherwise, we really dont go on vacation. Our last true vacation was a few yrs go when we went to California. We scrimp and save every day. We dont have a lot of debt so its just regular bills and mortgage.
    Keep your chin up!

Unfortunately those monthly bills just keep getting higher & higher! I don't know what I would do if we had credit card debts paying our usual bills is getting harder to do every month!

I am trying to get dh to retire already..We pay for this house and an apartment in Maryland.. With double bills and his travel expenses both ways every weekend for 6 years is getting ridiculous... He is topped out on his pay scale and all he gets is cost of living raises... He is considering it but I want it done yesterday...

He has 3 years left... I want them to offer him an early out..
