It is the fact that he is refusing service to someone for reasons that are judgemental on his part.
And your "I imagine very very few" comes across as being rather pompuous. I am sure you don't mean it to sound that way. Just as you say that this man has the right to his religious beliefs (and I agree, he does), so does the person that is carrying a bottle of wine and needing a cab. I think there is a difference between a religious belief and just wanting to drink alcohol. He obviously is not observing and respecting their rights because he is refusing them service. And as I said before, if he he is so offended by these types of people, he is in the wrong business.
I really fear for this country in a few years, it looks like we might become another Germany. Only certain religions, blond hair, blue eyes will be the ultimate race, etc...

I think you're being a bit dramatic there......no one is collecting anyone and sending them off to any chambers. We're just all trying to get along without stepping on each other's toes too much.

Dramatic? Hardly. I am anything but dramatic. I can assure you my toes aren't stepped on. Honestly, I have a bit more going on in real life, that a thread on a freebie board is gonna bother me. I just was trying to get people to see that there are others in this world besides themselves and they come to our country to have a better life, not to change their beliefs because they aren't the same as theirs.
Just for the record, name calling and crap really affects me very little. I have been here for many many years and have read just about everything possible here, I can assure you that your comments or others comments, do not affect me.

Re: Muslim cabby's refuse passengers
Good grief. No-one said they could not practice their own religion. What I have a problem with is when their religion infringes on the rights of someone else. Secularists have been pushing Christianity out of every day life for many years, why should Islam be afforded any other benefits?
People come here for the American Dream, the American way of life. Part of that life is not pushing their religious beliefs on Joe Public. Oh, and in this case, Joe Public pays for their contracts.

When people come to this country they should assimilate and join the 'melting pot'. The country should not 'join them' or assimilate to 'them'. No one is telling them that they may not practice their religion.....just that they must respect the commonness of the population. If that is against their religion, well, they can hold a job that they wouldn't have to compromise themselves in. Not everyone has the 'right' to hold any job they want and expect that 'job' to be 'tailored' to their religion.
As for this country becoming another Germany, yes that is over dramatized in my opinion.
And I can assure you, that if I need public transportation and I am denied because someone is imposing their religious beliefs on me, my toes are stepped on. You may not mind, but I do. Just like I'd be ticked off if I am in a line of black people and a taxi bypasses all of them and comes to me, an obvious sign of discrimination. I'd let the first in line have that cab, and have.
One of my favorite passages:
First They Came for the Jews
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
Pastor Martin Niemöller
I try to be objective and considerate of others, in hopes that I would be treated the same. I try to look at the total picture, not just of my 'friend's plight' when it's convenient for me.

If a CONTRACT is in order then they have the right not to renew or cancel it at any given time.

This isn't about my one friends plight, especially beings she is a doctor, not a taxi cab driver. My thoughts, opinions here are my plight as I like my freedom and my rights just fine. You might not mind the current administration running your life, but I prefer to run my own. You give a little and they take more.
From reading your favorite passage, seems to me you are contradicting yourself? Maybe, possibly, I miss understood it when I read it.

well, that is exactly how i feel on this matter. they or anyone else should not take a job where they might have to deal with something that goes against their religion and therefore they can't perform it. i am a hospice nurse and a Christian. Now, i would assume that a Muslim female would not be able to hold this job because I have to see and touch both male and female genitalia every day cleaning it and inserting catheter's and such. should one decide to be a nurse, would they have the right to refuse that part of the job? no...it's ridiculous.
it's clear as a bell to me. don't take the job if it's going to interfere with your religous beliefs.
and i love that poem. it's one of my favorite's.
There is always someone bigger and badder than you!

Re: Muslim cabby's refuse passengers
"The following comes directly from the ADA website regarding both private and public cabs use.
Q: What are the laws that apply to my business?
A: Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), privately owned businesses that serve the public, such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, taxicabs, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities, are prohibited from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. The ADA requires these businesses to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed.
Q: I operate a private taxicab and I don't want animals in my taxi; they smell, shed hair and sometimes have "accidents." Am I violating the ADA if I refuse to pick up someone with a service animal?
A: Yes. Taxicab companies may not refuse to provide services to individuals with disabilities. Private taxicab companies are also prohibited from charging higher fares or fees for transporting individuals with disabilities and their service animals than they charge to other persons for the same or equivalent service.
By all rights those taxicab drivers and or owners who refuse Service Dogs can be sued for discrimination. And trust me it will happen. Just ask Kmart, who just settled a 13 Million Dollar Class Action Lawsuit for not having stores accomodated for the disabled, and not allowing Servie Annimals in their stores in certain states."
VERY well said
and I am surprized no one has commented on it...
