Thanksgiving help
I know it is early still but I have been volunteered to host Thanksgiving this year for dh's side of the family. His mom said we have the biggest house so we need to have it here. I know they are thinking we are going to buy most everything but dh said last night we were not. His mom usually does it and she makes a list with things for everyone to bring, so everyone will bring 2-3 things. I told him we need to let them know now that we are not buying everything.
I have never done a Holiday before so I am not sure where to begin. I am thinking I need to make a list of all the food we are going to have and maybe have everyone pick what they want to bring?
What do you usually have for Thanksgiving in your family? I would like to do one or two things new so I am open to options.
Is there anything I can do now to make things a little easier?
Any advise you can give me would be great..Thank you!

since it is only August, I would wait and see what others are doing.

my mom usually makes TG dinner, but this year I'm making dinner since my father will be up. However she usually makes turkey, sweet potato caserole, noodles (ream's frozen egg noodles boiled in water with chicken bullion- soooo my favorite!), fruit salad, mashed potatoes, green bean caserole, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and home made rolls.

We are on a super tight budget and I need to start now if I am going to be able to get the things we need. That is why I was asking, BTW today is September 1 LOL

another idea for you as well- my mom does this at christmas...have appetizers! she'll cut up veggies get crackers/triscuits and cheese, olives etc. that way at christmas she doesn't make so much food, usually just ham green bean casserole (thanks for the spell check lol) potato salad and noodles.
i think it goes w/o saying but i forgot the pumpkin pies @ TG.

Wow, I don't even want to think about this yet. LOL. Maybe you could start skimming just a few $$ a week from your grocery budget and put it away. Also, you can buy things like can veggies, frozen veggies, can fruit, can pie filling, pudding/pie mix, even pie shells or the frozen crusts if you use those or flour, shortening, a little each week. That way you can be prepared to make some things last minute after you know what everyone else is bringing.
This is what we normally have:
Salad
Several diff kinds or rolls, breads
Turkey
Gravy
Stuffing
Mashed Potatoes
Mashed Sweetpotato casserolle
Greenbean Casserolle
Cranberry Sauce
Candied baby carrots
Homemade mac n cheese
Brocolli w/cheese sauce
One different veggie each year-last year was acorn squash, this year who knows
desserts-applepies, cherrypie, keylimepie, pumpkin pie, Carvel turkeyicecreamcake(to wash down the pies, LOL) cranberry coolwhip pie
appetizers-shrimp w/cocktail sauce, raw veggies w/dip

ack, you are right, my bad. well, I would ask what they want me to be in charge of making. Why don't you just say, "I will do desserts". I would definately give everyone a dish to bring. If no one brings it, then it will be that much less food you have.
