Question about electricians and hours
Long story but would an electrician be called at 2am on a Saturday to come in to work? This person is supposedly in the IBEW and works for a company that does electrical on buildings in the city that are just being built-ie: not being lived in or used yet.
I dont trust my cousins DH. He has always seemed "shifty". Less than a yr ago he quit his job (I honestly think he was fired). He decided he was going to become an electrician.....supposedly started school as soon as he "quit" his other job and didnt have to wait. Supposedly got a job while still in school with a company and is in the IBEW-with no experience. Supposedly is still taking classes and having tests. Supposedly is getting called in to work at 2am and working "LONG HARD and different hours". Something is not adding up to me.

Well, yes, they can be called at 2am.. depending on their job requirements.
Not saying anything fishy isn't going on. Is he bringing home a paycheck that shows his hours? Most places that have you on call or working 3rd shift pay a time differential.

Ah, okay. I had no idea that they would call in an apprentice at 2am out of the blue. I mean I know he is low man on the totem pole but I am confused as to why they would be working at that time on a building that is under construction-unless to make deadlines.
****Just wanted to add that I am worried because he is a former drug dealer/gang member and has really had a personality change in the past yr or so-for the worst and has become totally antisocial. He also looks terrible and has lost a TON of weight and is always sleeping when not at work or school. I just am concerned.

Well, like I said, it really just depends on the job requirements. If they are working on a place that has a deadline coming up and it looks like they might miss it, you bet they will be working all kinds of funky hours....
BUT ... that doesn't mean he's not up to something. I have learned to trust my gut in those situations.

Yup, this.
As the low guy on the totem pole, it makes sense that he would get sh!t on but at the same time, 2am? I would have my doubts.

I have friends that work in that Union. Ummm yeah they aren't working all that much. They have yet to be called in at 2 a.m even when they are new. The only thing I can say is maybe just maybe they are working him if he new. Since the older members would get paid more for going out at such time. Let me know if you need anymore info. I can always ask them.
I find it very hard to belive, honestly. I know the city is not as busy at 2 am, but at that time it calls for overtime and all that good stuff.
Sorry

Yes, it is very possible he could be called in at that time or anytime for that matter. My DH looked terrible too when he went through his apprenticeship. People kept asking if he was sick. He lost weight and got horrible dark circles under his eyes. He had to work at least 12 hours a day, usually 7 days a week, and take classes and testing on top of that. He slept when he wasn't working too. I think they get anisocial because they are plain and simply too tired to socialize. As soon as he got his journeyman's card I started unplugging the phone so they couldn't call him in. Some of the guys worked up to 20 hours a day and I thought 12 was enough. Truthfully your cousin's DH is lucky he got an apprenticeship now. It is very hard to get into one here with the economy what it is. My DH isn't IBEW but his brother is and he went through the same thing.

I work for a Electrical Contractor and NO he would not be called in if they work on New Construction. If it was a service problem the last person they would call is an apprentice. By the way in Florida you have to do 4 years of school along with work to be able to take a journeyman test. If you do work only it is 6 years before you qualify. He is blowing smoke up your skirt. Union or not they would not call out an apprentice. As for working as many hours as Beanie's DH - that doesn't happen here unless the economy is extremely busy and there are no available people to hire or the company they work for just doesn't staff a job properly. We have had several guys go through the apprenticeship program here and they go to class 2 nights a week for 2 hours per night and work a regular 40 hour week. I can attest to the fact that 99% of the time they were only in class for 1 1/2 hours a night on average.

I don't buy it. At that hour? If he is union and at the bottom of the list, that would mean that everyone above him turned it down. With money the way it is, someone would have jumped on some overtime.
I would sit down and talk with him. Find out what is going on from the source. Only he can tell you and set your mind at ease.
