I only registered to reply to you. I had this surgery done 5 months ago and it has been a very interesting experience. It was incredibly painful but has been worth it!! I have lost 76 lbs and I LOVE it although you have to remember to chew a lot every.single.time. or it will hurt!!!
I did not have diabetes or anything like that but my feet hurt a lot every night, to the point where I had trouble getting up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom. All that has changed.
I did not do the pre-op diet but I did have 20 days of liquids only after the surgery. Right now I am still in the process of finding out what I can and can't eat.
Good luck to you and I hope everything works out great!!!!

I was so close to getting gastric bypass surgery, it was my last hope but I thought I'd try Weight Watchers and really commit to the program, it took me one year and I lost 150 lbs! I have kept the weight off for one year next week. I can't say it was easy but I did learn how to eat and I love that I can eat anything I want as long as stay withing my points.. I wish you the best and know you'll feel so much better when you lose the weight, no matter how we do it, its a change for the better..
Why not learn to enjoy the little things - there are so many of them.

And I think the fact needs to be made that these diabetics that are being magically cured have Type 2 diabetes, correct? I'm assuming so because there is NO CURE for Type 1 diabetes. I have it, have had it since i was 7, I am now 37. My endocrinologist, Dr. Buse, is one of the leading experts on Diabetes and would be thrilled if he could cure me. Hell, I weigh about 130 pounds but I would gladly have this surgery done if it would "cure" my diabetes. Sorry, but wanted all the "facts" to be clear. I would hate for someone w/ Type 1 to get too excited regarding this surgery.
Good luck with your surgery Callsheb, losing weight is not easy no matter how you do it.

I must say I do not know..I am *thinking* mom had type 2, that sounds right but I'm not 100% positive..
There are drawbacks & risks to all surgeries and as I recall after mom's they left gauze in her & she got an infection from it. ....But that was the only down side to it. (that & it took months to cure her diabetes, it was not immediate)

I know personally of someone who had it done also. She looks good now, is in about a size 5 after weighing about 300 lbs or so. But she really suffered to get to where she is now, getting scurvy and all her teeth fell out because she was not getting enough vitamins in her food. Apparently this is very common. All you see on tv are the ppl who have had wonderful results with it, not the ppl in real life. I know now it is done laprascopically which is what I would have done if I were you. Also, my friend did get the trememdous amount of saggy skin around her belly.

I'm glad you brought that up Tham because even on the Biggest Loser people who had Type 2 Diabetes lost a lot of weight and it went away on its own. Excess weight DOES cause a lot of health problems but it CAN be done withour surgery, catsass is living proof (you go girl!), she is my inspiration but I am using TOPS not Weight Watchers...same type of thing.

Patchouli: the hospital is called BROOKHAVEN.
It is a great place, and yesa spome people do not follow the rules, and some do. Many have lost the weight, and the doctors there do not suggest bypass surgery (as it is too risky for their patients).
I have 3 friends who have had the bypass surgery, and one who did the lap band.
The band slipped, and she ended up needing emergency sugery( bad doctor I think).
2 of the 3 bypass people are doing great. One just had a baby (bypass 4 years ago).
The other: she did it about a year ago, lost 60 pounds, and began eating like a horse again. Last time I saw her, she was carrying a LARGE bag of Cheetos and munching like crazy: complaning that she has not lost the weight she expected.
I just hope that the ones getting this surgery, get the psych help that they need with it. Therapy helps you cope with the changes in your lifestyle you will be making. Some doctors demand 6 months before sugery and 18 after: some suggest it, but do not require it. Plus, do some background on the doctor doing the surgery. Find out how long the doctor has specialized in weight loss. And look into the hospital you will be going to.
Remember: the surgery is only as good as the patient, the doctor and the care.
(PS: there is no cure for Type I diabetes: and Type II is usually controlled by weight, nutrition and exercise, and is caused USUALLY by bad nutritional, and activity lifestyle choices).

But if i dont have this surgery i will in about a month have to do more insulin i have to keep raising the insulin so this was the best way for me to maybe not be a diabetic anymore but doctor has said do not get hopes up that i will get rid of insulin all together but probably will be down alot on the insulin my hope no more meds at all. I wished i could lose by diet but with the body rejecting it is not going to be possible.
I have a question about the insulin you take. Are you taking Lantis (or Lantus not sure of the spelling) and then taking the shots of Humalog at mealtimes? If that is the one you are on you might want to have your Dr. change you to Humulin or Novolin and see if those work. My Dr. put me on Lantis for 2 weeks and it just about put me in the hospital. It did not work at all on me. After the 2 weeks I called my Dr. and e-mailed her my glucose results and also told her that I will never go on that stuff again - my sugar was never below 500 using Lantis. Needless to say I went back on Humulin and haven't had a problem since. Actually let me correct one part I take Novolin now - my insurance treats it as a "generic".

THANKS!!! Tops is great, too! Both show you HOW to eat, portion control (I didn't realize a serving of cereal or ice cream is only a half cup not 3 bowls full, lol.) I also found out I can have a steak & baked potato at a restaurant for the same calories as a "healthy salad" (who knew) , its amazing what I was eating & drinking and still felt like I was eating good, I now make good choices & don't ever deny myself, I only walk for exercise and have never felt better. Every program isn't for everyone, you need to find what works for you, good luck DBackFan, I know you can do it!!!
