Is this something new or am I just out of the loop?

My SS and his wife are throwing their own baby shower. They will go to the store and register but then they are paying for the room at a restaruant to have the party. It will be both men & women invited.

Just wondered if any of you have been invited to a shower like that? It does make it easy on knowing who will step forward and throw the shower for them.

They told us so do you think they are hinting for us to pay for the room? People will buy their own refreshments. I wouldn't mind having it at our house but it may be difficult since the parents are all divorced---both sides so the ex's may not want to come to a house. KWIM? GRRRR, things are so different now.

that's a new one for me but every day the traditional way of doing things change. Might be something new out there. I definately have not hear of goig to a shower/party where I have to buy my own food for it.
Or maybe they just figured they didn't know who would give them something and just decided to do it on their own.

Are they inviting the same people that you would to a shower? If not then you can throw a seperate one later. If they are and you wanted to do more, offer to pay for the location.

Beats the heck out of me -mine was very traditional, no men, no kids; but I did bring meatballs to my shower - SIL thought that so weird but I love to cook!

My showers were also co-ed, however, I have never heard of paying for my own refreshments. Why don't they rent a hall & make it potluck? I don't think I would want to go to a shower where I would have to pay for my own refreshments.
Did you offer to host it at your place? If so, what did they say?

My ex-sil is expecting her second child next month. Last month was her shower. Yes, I went for my neice. However, I thought it was strange as well....we all brought something to the party (food), it was co-ed, children...lots of them too.

Needless to say the men were outside most of the time. I've never seen this done before either. Very different.

The men were also engaged in the party games. Now that I thought was really strange.

Ive been to a lot of showers where the dads were involved, it is their baby too after all. As for throwing it for yourself, thats a bit odd. Im thinking that if there are ex's and such that maybe they thought renting somewhere would be less uncomfortable. And buying your own snacks, yeah thats odd to me.

    It sounds odd to me.

Before my son and his girlfriend were married she wanted a shower, because according to her "I will get lots of presents and I can return them and get the money". She was telling this to a lot of people.

There is some things that seems tacky. She had no one that would give her a shower so her mom did it. I had always heard that the parents are not supposed to throw the showers but how else would she have gotten gifts to exchange for money. Dh and I saved her time and we gave her money.

Coed showers are modern and ok but throwing your own shower (any kind) is still tacky. I love ehell's discussion board for stories of bad etiquette.

That is a new one for me. I have never heard of someone doing things that way. When we had them someone stepped up and planned it (if they paid for it or asked ppl to bring stuff). My mom always made everything but the cake herself, and we paid a bit for either the VFW or the firehall. My sister did mine though, she was also very preggo so she just rented a room in Denny's and she paid for it.

And as for the guys going I have never heard of that either. Only girls and maybe some very young boys. LOL, the guys did show at the end though to help clean up and pack up the gifts.

I guess you can do whatever you want though.
