do NOT do this, it can harm the tooth, by eroding enamel on the tooth and causing more damage, and "apririn burn" on the gums.

This will help the pain and it does work, but is not good for your gums. If used to much it cause a sore on your gums. I speak from experience. And my dentist said not to do this. And like SLance68 said it might not be a good idea if you are on blood thinners.

If it has some infection in it, use a tea bag. (just a regular tea bag, dry or damp) Place it between your cheek and the tooth and hold it there about an hour. You will need a bottle to spit in though because staright tea from a bag like that is just nasty!
I actually found this online about 2 weeks ago when I had a bad toothache. Do it a few times a day. The tea will help draw out the infection. It helped me! I just used it dry. Good luck!

My dentist said, if the tooth hurts, then there is probably infection in there so do not use temp filling if there is any infection inside. He said it is like shaking a bottle of coke and capping it off. If you have a healthy tooth that breaks or a filling falls out, you can fill it with this stuff. I used the temp stuff once on a toothache w/ a hole in it and OMG! The pain got sooo much worse when I put that stuff on it. The infection 'festers' in there and expands, causing more pain (so my dentist explains)

Try holding an ice cube in the hand on the same side of the tooth. I have actually done this before and it worked. Something about the nerves and if you "numb" those in your hand it also "numbs" those in the tooth.
