Do you cash your Gift Certificates?

I was listening to a talk radio program today and had a person on their that says gift certificates are the biggest money maker for stores. As 25% of the people who get gift cards never cash them and throw them away.

Gee that is money. I think his numbers are wrong.
What do you thinK?

I would believe it! We gave my mom a $100 gift card to Sears for Christmas in 2004. She STILL has it and has about $50 left on it. She says she forgets about it.

I have at least $200 in gift cards sitting in my purse. I just never think to use them. It's hard for me to remember how much I have on each one. I know I can check online or over the phone, but I forget to do that, too. lol

My SS would never use them but then he never cashed the checks he got. So I think checks are better, at least, you have the money until the check is cashed.

AND GC can be stolen and used by anyone.

we still have a gift cert to a restaurant that someone gave us as a wedding shower gift in july 2005.....i still have a movie gift cert from last Christmas....i also still have a manicure pedicure gift cert from my birthday 2004

....luckily none expire!

I normally forget them also. Or I will use it and forget about the balance remaining.

I always stick a post it or piece of tape on my GC's and write the balance on it.

I TOTALLY believe this. Lots of time they are put away with the christmas decorations because it was a stocking stuffer or they get lost in a closet. I had one that I JUST found in my closet last night from 2 years ago. Still full and useable....thank goodness most of them don't expire

A lot of them expire or the balance gets eaten up in charges. I have so many that I'm saving for 'something special', for what only got knows and they're probably useless now, but they are not good gifts for me. They're 'easy' for the gift giver, but it depends on the recipient....I'm a bad recipient...
