anyone own a scanner?

My Mom has mention she would like to have one. I guess so she knows whats going on around town. I don't know anything about them. What is a decent one? About how much should I expect to spend? Where is the best place to buy one? Thanks

i went to Radio Shack, but of course that is the only place in our town that has them, I think I spend 100.00 and it is small, to where you can put batteries in the back, or plug it up. It works real good, but I have no idea what kind it is, i am at work not home.

there are a lot of places where you can listen to them online if you are in a big city. I just type in "(name of city) police scanner" and you can find serveral of them.

I bought my husband a really nice one from the local pawn shop for $49.99 and he bought a handheld one at radio shack....not quite sure how much he paid for it but i know it was closer to $100 if not a little more. My hubby says the best brand for them is the UNIDEN.

Thanks! I am listening to our city now! They are surrounding a house with a guy with a warrant for involuntary manslaughter out on him!
