Ok at the company I work for, the hiring manager is from a country in Africa and he has a severe tendency to only hire people from this particular country, well people from his tribe in this country. This man is a very prominent figure in the company and he recently sent out this email, only to people who were black, not even african americans. The message before the poem was "Interesting, I am sending this to the team" The only thing the people have in common is they have black skin.

Being Black in the Work Place

They take my kindness for weakness.
They take my silence for speechless.
They consider my uniqueness strange.
They call my language slang.
They see my confidence as conceit.
They see my mistakes as defeat.
They consider my success accidental.
They minimize my intelligence to "potential".
My questions mean "I'm unaware".
My advancement is somehow unfair.
Any praise is preferential treatment.
To voice concern is discontentment.
If I stand up for myself, I'm too defensive.
If I don't trust them, I'm too apprehensive.
I'm defiant if I separate.
I'm fake if I assimilate.
Yet, constantly I am faced with work place hate.
My character is constantly under attack.
Pride for my race makes me, "TOO BLACK".
Yet, I can only be me. And, who am I you might ask?
I am that Strong Black Person...
Who stands on the backs of my ancestor's achievements, with an erect
spine pointing to the stars with pride, dignity and respect which lets
the work place in America know, that I not only possess the ability to
play by the rules, but I can make them as well!

Now what do you guys think of that? My coworkers and myself felt it rather rude, pretty much everyone I've asked about it has felt it very rude, if I sent that exact thing out and put white in place of black I wouldn't have a job now would I? No flaming please just looking for feedback.

Ok.. I have to know what the difference between "black" and "african american" is.

It's funny....I have a friend who was born in South Africa but became and american citizen. SHe marks "Afro american" on all her census, surveys etc. People look at her like she is nuts.

I am the kind of person that would confront my boss. I would ask what was going on and what they were doing . I wouldn't take it lightly. That is just plain wrong.

I guess and i am speaking from my point of view & what i would do if i was in that situation is to make a copy of it and enclose it with a written complaint to the office of civil rights. It is a sad day and a sad situation when the world comes to this low behavior especially coming from a supervisor & a person that is supposed to be in a position of authority that should be setting an example for the rest!! Just my own opinion!!

Not all "African Americans" are black.
I know quite a few South Africans who are "caucasian". And you should see how Pi$t they get when "blacks" use the term " African American"!

AS for the letter, I would get in contact with the ACLU. You have "civil liberties" as well , seems to me like you are working in a hostel environment, you may have a lawsuit on your hands.

I'm a
business major and I've had many classes on ethics. The man who sent the email is a raging racist and his email should be forwarded to his immediate supervisor and if there is no action then you need to contact human resources. Also email sent at work from the businesses computer is not private, is owned by the company, and no right to privacy exists in this situation. Sending personal emails to co-workers on company time is STEALING!!!!
