are you happy with your child's public education?

i just watched a show last night...i believe it was 20/20 and i was so disappointed in what they showed. the public schools in AMERICA really are atrocious for the most part. we live in SC (just moved here 1 1/2 years ago) and they rank last in SAT scores. i have 2 children in the public school system...one in the first grade, and one in the fifth.....i'm seriously thinking about private schools.

The city schools here in Kingsport, Tennessee are so wonderful. We moved from NC about 6 months back and I can tell a huge difference in what my dd is learning now. As far as the school she came from in NC....it was a good school, they are just more advanced here from what I can see!

of course not, that might be cause I am a parent advocate and know what the rules and laws are and what the school is supposed to do that they don't.

Re: are you happy with your child's public education?

    No, i'm not happy.

I live in Louisiana and we are toward the bottom for education.

I have teachers who can't spell right not to mention our daughter gets no homework because teachers don't want to work after school.

They only have few projects per day so teachers can grade them before going home.

All they want to teach is what is required and then they stop.

Also, where did breaks go? Kids used to get recess etc. and now they don't.

PE is only 1 day a week ?!

No, not happy at all with the public school system.

I totally agree......(about the problems). I don't like the fact that other districts get better things because of money. We don't even have a bus service! I shouldn't complain, because it is really not that bad. Student ratio is 19 to one. Parents are allowed in once they are background checked...but there are not many events for the children to particpate in. The music program isn't that great....either is the art. Private schools are just as bad.I woudl love to home school, but the social aspect is what I believe my children would miss.

Not in anyway I am satisfied or in any way happy with our public school system... I never have been. Unfortunately it is all we can afford. I work hard with my children at home and pray for the best.

I do know of one christian school here in town that takes applications for scholarships, I am not sure when the deadline is every time I call they are full. I think you may have to belong or know someone in the church to get in.

I wish there was a better answer to this, It is so very frustrating, all the money the government dishes out... where is public school funding????????

Re: are you happy with your child's public education?

Is there really any GREAT schools out there with the best of the best teachers/educators? Education begins at home and continues at home, but so many people believe its up to the schools to teach everything. Some of the homes these kids come from are just awful and when their child isnt doing well they are the ones to complain. It doesnt matter that the parents arent helping at home, scream and yell at their kids its always the schools fault. I really dont think there are as many special ed children--I think if parents worked with them from the beginning that they would have been able to keep up with the others. It seems like they just want to throw labels on these kids. Now I know some of them do have learning problems but why has it grown so so so much. Parents unable to help their own.

they did show some good schools on 20/20.......not many, but a few. they were mostly in districts with homes valued over 300,000.

i guess the people you are refering to with the exception of the special education kids such as those with add, autism, and other disablilites, would come from lower income families ( i don't know if there is any correlation between income and add, adhd, autism and the like). they are the ones who need the most help, but get the least.

Re: are you happy with your child's public education?

My oldest went to public school and private and I homeschool her some. My youngest went to public. She was special needs she never go what she needed. She would come home totally stressed. So I pulled her out and homeschooled her. I am negative on public education, but that is only here and my opinion.
