Re: Anyone had a tonsillectomy? What is involved?
Well I'm 46 and had mine out when I was about 9-10 years old. So I am sure things have changed since when I had mine done. I remember I went in on a Friday night had them out on Sat came home on Sunday. Had a sore throat and could eat ice cream and some soup.
From what I have heard the older your are to get it done the worse it hurts. Maybe someone else can tell you better that has had them out more recently or has them removed as a adult.

Come on Spring!!
Re: Anyone had a tonsillectomy? What is involved?
You will be able to go home a few hours after the procedure. What they do now is use a laser to cut them out and this will carterize the blood vessels and capalires (i know I really cannot spell). You will be able to talk but your throat will the scratchy....I would HIGHLY recommend staying away from the dairy products. They really do not settle well with you and they tend to leave a slim in the back of your throat. Make sure you have popcicles and soft foods such as soups. You will have to be careful and not have them too hot because that will be painful on the throat. If you have any other questions, you can PM or email me and I will be more than happy to give you more info. I just didn't want to put tmi in this post

Re: Anyone had a tonsillectomy? What is involved?
The problem is the older you are, the worse it is on you. I was 31 when I had mine out. It was the worse pain ever. Worse then childbirth. I left the hospital after 2 days and ended up back in the hospital(after 1 1/2 days out) for another 3 days. I could not talk or swallow anything. It was a slow healing process and I am glad I had it done. Just listen to your doctor and dont rush anything.

Re: Anyone had a tonsillectomy? What is involved?
My DH just had his removed this past Monday (he is 49). It was a 30 minute operation and he only had to stay for 2 hours after. They gave him a script for antibiotics and pain meds. He is using the pain meds like crazy! He was told not to eat anything warm/hot for 3-4 days cuz it can cause bleeding to occur. Like an "idoit" he insisted on eating some tomato soup today, although I told him not to...well he paid for it! Caused him lots of pain but thankfully no bleeding. He is in agony right now but he knows it will only be for a little longer and that out weighs the tons of problems he was having before. He has to be out of work for 2 weeks and can do NO lifting for 10 days.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I hope you get to feeling better real soon.
