First time flying....any advice?
Hi all...
My daughter placed 3rd at a regional dance competition back in march and qualified for the nationals, which I am very proud of but they are held in LAS VEGAS. That means I have to get on a plane...lol. We fly out of Atlanta on July 3rd and return on the 11th. Any advice or tips? I've never even been in the airport...lol. Help !!!!
Also , we're staying at The Royal Vacation Suites around the Convention Center, anybody know the place or been there ? I really don't want to stay in a roach motel for a week ! Thanks in advance !

When I fly I just don't think about it. Your safer in a plane than a car. Once I'm in the air I just settle in and read.
If all else fail get a drink once they start serving

Re: First time flying....any advice?
I just flew for the first time in april. For airport security wear tennis shoes that tie and if possible pants that button. LOL remember no metal, even a barrette will set it off. Yep you guessed it, it happened to me. Just relax flying is great.

Re: First time flying....any advice?
Well, first, make sure you get to the airport plenty early. In big citys I would say 2 hours early at least. You will be much less stressed if you sit in the terminal because you are early, than if you are rushing to make your flight. Bring someting to read on the plane, it helps pass the time, and bring a sweatshirt or some type of light coat that you can easily store in your carry on, 8 out of 10 times it seems like they are trying to freeze you off the plane! Expect a long wait for security, and if you do set off the alarm (my belt set it off last time, cause I forgot to take it off), expect an even longer delay as they will do a more thourogh search, including checking your shoes. Also, try to plan on not eating at the airport, the cost of food in there is outrageous!
Other than that, just try to relax and enjoy the experience! Oh, also, someone suggested having a drink on the plane, I think, I am a nervous flyer, so one time I had one beer before I got on the plane, and as soon as we were in the air, I had to fight not to fall asleep! Hehe. I don't know if it does that to many people, but just an FYI, in case you're like me, and don't feel comfortable sleeping in public!

Re: First time flying....any advice?
well congrats on your daughter's win! I flew for the very first time 4 yrs ago. It's nothing. Piece of cake. But this was before 911, so I dunno how it is going thru lines, etc. But I do agree. Go plenty early. Enjoy yourself!

Re: First time flying....any advice?
I flew for the first time last month. The biggest thing I found out is that it is BORING. Be sure to take things that will entertain you. Lots of things in your carry on or your purse.
I flew Southwest so we did not have assigned seating. If you want leg room try to get the seats by the emergency exit. That means be at the airport about two hours before take off so you can get the A tickets. These people will load first and have first dibs.
You can talk to your daughter or play games with her. Think of things that will keep you busy. Look around and see how many people are sleeping. That relaxed me since I thought this can't be too bad if people can fall asleep even before the plane takes off. LOL
Also think of the fun you will have in Vegas and how much time and trouble you are saving by flying instead of driving. Make it a positive experience. You will do just fine.

Have fun....it's still safer than driving!
It will be a cool experience for you. Chew gum when the plane takes off or lands if the air pressure hurts your ears.
Keep drinking water or juice to stay hydrated.
If you wear contacts, you might find they bother you, so keep extra solution handy or take them out and wear your glasses.
Take a carry on with your essentials in case they lose your luggage!!!
I flew to England (over 7-8 hours) with our son when he was less than 2 and had a MAJOR ear infection (found that out upon arrival). It was a hell ride, but we "survived." I have flown to various places and find it interesting.
If you get nervous, try to block out anything that bothers you. I tend NOT to listen to the flight attendant and her speeches about "what to do if there is a crash" because that makes me nervous....
