What kinda things would you need for a kitten?
This is probably a stupid question... but I've never had a cat so I really don't know. But.. we're thinking about getting a kitten.. what should we get for it? I mean, I know the basics, like litter box, food, cat litter... and... that's it! Lol, I really have no idea.. so if anyone can help me, please do! TIA!

Re: What kinda things would you need for a kitten?
It's not a stupid question. I have my cats plus I foster for the Humane Society and I tame cats for the Feral Cat Foundation. Two VERY important items are toys and a scratching post. If you are only getting one kitten those items will be necessary to save your furniture and curtains. Also a squirt bottle is good to have to train the kitten. Never hit it with anything. Use the water bottle. You will also need a pair of clippers. Regular fingernail clippers will do, to trim his/her claws. Believe it or not, if you get two kittens they will be company for each other and you won't have to worry everytime you leave the house that the cat got bored and shredded something! Have fun!

Kay, 3 things, 1) like dragonlady said, if you can do it, two kittens will be great company for each other, but also remember that means twice the cost for food, litter, vet, etc... 2) Clumping cat litter is much better than the regular stuff, and will cost you less in the long run, because you don't have to change out all the litter every couple of days, but I wouldn't recommend flushing it, even if it says you can, it's still good at clogging drains, our favorite is Arm& Hammer brand & 3) When my cat was a kitten, his absolute favorite toy was a fake mouse attatched to an elastic cord that you hang from a doorway. You can get them at wal mart. And my adult cats love the small furry mice, and stuffed toys filled with catnip.
Good luck with your cat adventure!

Your first couple of vet appointments might be expensive because there are lots of things that cats have to be vaccinated for. They have to be vaccinated for FVRCP, rabies, feline leukemia and I think there are a couple of other things but that's all that comes to mind right now. lol When we first got our cat she had ringworm and ear mites so she had to be treated for that. She was also dewormed because the vet said that most kittens are born with worms. You will also want to have the cat spayed or neutered when it's old enough. My vet told me that I should brush my cats teeth because as cats age they can have problems with their teeth just like humans do. They also have enzyme biscuits that you can get if you aren't able to brush their teeth. I clip my cats nails after she's had her bath. It's easier to see the nail when her fur is wet. She has a bath at least once a month. I've been bathing her since she was a kitten so she's used to it.

Re: What kinda things would you need for a kitten?
like everyone else said if you could two kittens are better. I only have one cat but i had dogs also to keep the kitten company for when my family and i went out. I had gotten my my cat declawed when he was a kitten to save myself from the scratches and my furniture being a mess...plus the vet said its better to have it done that way. my opinion cats like to have some place to lay and nap..we got a kitty bed for my cat when he was a kitten except he refused to sleep in it, instead he picked my moms basket to lay in. so we just added a towel and tucked it away behide the couch and that is where he sleeps all the time. Also its better to tame your cat as a indoor cat rather than an outside cat. this way it wouldn't get into any kitty fights (like my sisters cat) and wont pick up any ticks or anything like that. Id also get some kind of kitten treats to praise the kitten when he or she does something good, like actually poopin in the litter box and not next to it (lol my sisters cat still does this) or just as a morning treat. we give my cat treats when the dogs get treats and he knows exactly where they are to bc he will sit and meow at the kitchen cabinet until he gets his treat. Cats are great pets and they live a long time, i've had my cat for almost 13 yrs and hes frisky like a new born kitten and sometimes i think he believes hes a dog...lol he plays fetch with paper (yes he brings it back) also tends to wrestle with my littest dog and chews on their bones. its cute. good luck

Re: What kinda things would you need for a kitten?
No offense to anyone who's cat has been declawed but please don't do that to your cat. They make plastic tips that you can buy to put on your cats claws as an alternative to declawing. I have a friend who got her cat declawed and her own vet wouldn't even do it she had to take it to another vet. She regrets having it done because her cats paws were really sore and they got infected. They actually have to remove the last joint. They only remove the front claws. If you do decide to declaw your cat it's better to make sure it's an indoor cat only because without the claws they have nothing to defend themselves with.

I never had that problem with my cat, every cat that we had owned we got declawed..only because we rent and our landlord said no cats and we just hide the cat from him so in order to not show him we had a cat and have claw marks on furniture him hanging from curtains we had him declawed, but nothing was ever infected and he does just fine without them..like you said it is better for a indoor cat and that is what he is..never goes outside hes 2 scared. but he does try and claw at things but still has not begin to notice he has no claws and hes been declawed for about 11 yrs. but i see nothing wrong with it, he does just fine with out them and he wrestles the dog with out scratching them and doesnt scratch my nieces or nephews..i think its better declawed but that is my opinion.

Declawing is outlawed in many European countries, but in the United States is still considered a viable surgical procedure by many veterinarians.

I've only had 1 cat that wouldn't use a scratching post and I used those plastic tips with him. I just hate the thought of having this surgury done for no good reason, it's akin to removing our fingers up to the 1st knuckle.

Two kittens sounds like a good idea but I really don't know if I can afford all the vet visits for two kittens... and I don't wanna find out after I already have two! So, If I do get a kitten, it'll be the only one. At least for awhile anyways. I do plan on keeping him/her indoors only. There's too many cats around here and I don't know, it just doesn't seem like a good idea to have mine out there with them. I was thinking about some things while I was going to sleep last night and since you guys have been so much help, I'm asking ya'll! So.. a few more questions. Do only male cats spray things? My grandma's cat did this and it was the nastiest thing ever... Do cats automatically know to use the litter box or do you have to train them like dogs? How old does the kitten have to be before it can be fixed? And do you think it's a bad idea to keep it indoors all the time if it's the only kitten? I mean, wouldn't he get lonely without other cats?

Re: What kinda things would you need for a kitten?
Not all male cats spray and the ones that do can be taught not to. Please make your kitten an indoor cat. It will be healthier and live longer. You can check with your local Humane Society for vouchers to get the cat spayed/neutered at low or no cost depending on your finances. Most cats instinctively know how to use the box. You just put the kitten in it a couple of times and it will start digging. Most vets will not spay/neuter a cat until it is at least 8 weeks old. A lot of vets prefer 12 weeks. Two kittens will not cost a lot more than one. Since you would be taking them together you wouldn't be paying for extra vet visits. Most places have already given the cats their shots and have them spayed/neutered before you get them. It's different of course if you get them from a friend. If you absolutely can't get two, then you need to make sure you have lots of toys and things to keep him/her from getting bored. Whatever you do, PLEASE keep your kitty indoors. That way he/she will be around for a long time!
