Friendfinder isn't actually free. You can set up a profile but unless you become a paying member it makes it hard to contact anyone. A lot of these web sites do this. They get to you register claiming it's free but they don't tell you until you've already gone through all the trouble of joining that you can't contact anyone unless you upgrade your membership.
