Here in Greensboro, NC area everyone fixes ham, collard greens (gag) and 'hoppin' john (black eyed peas). Somehow it is suppose to bring good health and wealth. Bull honky and it tastes terrible except the ham.

LOL! I hadn't heard anyone say "bull honkey" in forever LOL! My step dad's family used to ALWAYS say that...except..my step dad wwould always butcher all words/sayings...he said "bull hockey", he also would say idjit for "idiot" and instead of saying "jack*ss" he says jacket*ss...

I happen to love black eyed peas,as long as they are'nt from a can.My mom fixes dried ones in her crockpot and adds some salt pork and they are really good. And she makes some good cabbage too.As for the cabbage though,we did a different version today.I made cabbage rolls and they are yummy! So we are heading to my parents for cabbage rolls, black eyed peas, and cornbread.

My mom use to make the blackeyed peas, cornbread, and cabbage for New Years as well. I never remembered to pick any up at the store, until this year, so I plan to make them with supper. I'm also making, mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread, fried chicken and corn on the cob. I forgot about the cabbage or I'd made cole slaw to go with dinner, but I'm not running to the store to buy cabbage. I guess we can try the coin in the peas, because I need all the luck I can get this year.

My fathers family is from the south. They always cook Hog Jawl, Black Eyed Peas, Corn Bread, and Collard Greens for New Years. They say it to bring Health, Wealth and Happiness in the coming year.

I'm from PA and we've always had sauerkraut, kielbasa and mashed potatoes on New Year's. Think your supposed to actually have it with pork, but my mom always made it with kielbasa and so that's the way I make it.

    It smells so good.
