I have always liked them and will continue to listen to their music no matter what type music they sing. What she said was wrong but it had nothing to do with their music(yes it hurt their fan base but the music is still the same).

Freedom of speech is granted us by the US Constitution. But it does not come without a price, or consequences. IF you choose to exercise your freedom of speech, on US soil or abroad, you have to be adult enough to take any repercussions that come with it. There is such a thing as restraint and regard for the common good (here being the United States et al) And a balance has to be struck between the two.

Hardly anyone is against freedom of speech. But it isn't always the simple "ideal" it seems to be. There are such things as moral strictures. This limits what can be said in good taste so as not to give offense to some 'people.' So as wonderful as the right to freedom of speech is, limits have been set (from time to time) in matters of public taste and/or morality.

The concept of freedom of speech opens a person up to be criticized for exercising that right. Which is what happened to the 'Chicks.'

Yes, we have a first amendment right to freedom of speech. But, as often as we sometimes want to say it, how many of us actually tell our boss to go to h*ll? How many of you would say "yes" when asked by a friend, "Do I look fat to you?" Why not? Because words are not empty. Words have meaning. Expressing thoughts as spoken words implies a willingness to face the consequences that may result from those words. In other words, if you can't take the heat, don't open your mouth.

Yes we can exercise freedom of speech. But shouldn't we exercise tact, wisdom and prudence when doing so? And face the consquences of our words when they are not accepted by the 'majority?' No where in the Bill of Rights does it say that free speech is protected from the economic harm it may cause. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what the Chicks are crying about most. Perhaps the Chicks should read a little Shakespeare: "Mend your speech a little, lest you may mar your fortunes."

You know, they might have freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean you have to like what they said, and if you don't, and choose not to be a fan of theirs anymore, then that is your freedom of choice.

I never cared for the Dixie Chicks but DH did until this. He is in the Navy and found what she said to be very disrespectful and he has decided not to buy or listen to their music anymore. I'm kind of glad, now I don't have to listen to it.

I don't like Natalie at all,and it has nothing to do with her statement about Bush.I think she had a right to say what she wanted. If she does'nt like George Bush, that is her choice, she isi'nt the only one that dislikes him,I don't like the man either.I agree with the fact that she should have been prepared to deal with the repercussions though, she should have known there were going to be some. And I'm a little surprised at Merle Haggard defending them...I remember his song Walking On The Fighting Side Of Me.I once heard Toby Keith say that Merle was the original "Angry American" because of that song. All I can say to the Chicks is DON"T LET THE OPRY DOORS HIT YOU IN THE ASS ON THE WAY OUT!!!

I thought Jay Leno was funny about it. He said they are going to be a rock group with the name Dixie Chicks?

I like some of their music just like every other musician I listen to. Country music is more patriotic then other types so they should have thought about that before opening their mouths. Well Natalie should have. Afterwards, a simple apology would have sufficed. Going on and on is what got people mad about the whole thing.

I like entertainers that keep the negative politics out of their act. They can talk about it in private and in interviews though.

This is why I thought George Carlin was out to lunch when he said "words are only words. How can they hurt"? Duh. Try that approach in a job interview.

Toby Keith's father fought in WWII so he was put off with their comments. He sings that song about his "father fought in the Army and lost his right eye, but he flew a flag out in the yard til the day that he died". And we do still have many people around who has a relative who fought in the war so it's hurtful to them when one says all wars are stupid. Their relative died in a war.

They weren't in the US when they stated their beliefs? That was dumb? I think they were in Britain. It's dumb to state your beliefs in Britain--is that what you mean? Our Constitution and basic rights are based on the Magna Carta, a British document of rights. They have the right to free speech in Britain too.

THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH IS NEVER DUMB

I believe that Gemini is refering to ( correct me if I am wrong, Gemi ) is that the original statements were made in Britian. Uproar ensued. DC issued an apology. Then they did an interview with an Austrialina paper in which they retracted the apologies, saying they were forced to say thet by the pressure of the media and negative publicity. Uproar ensued again. They said it was all a misunderstanding, "taken out of context" ... Now they are doin' an interview with a German magizine ( see the trend ? ) saying how they are disaffected with the country music industry .... Dollars to donuts they were "misquoted" - any takers ?

The point is - and I agree is rather short sighted - is the persistance in granting interviews with foreign journalists where they say unflattering things about their largest fan base ( or things pretty much guarrenteed to offend them ) and then act surprised that anyone has heard about it and wonder why their approval ratings and cash flow are drying up. THAT is pretty dumb.

All this hoopla made me aware of their music and I was surprised to learn that I like their singing. I don't care what their views, or the views of any celebrity, are about politics. Their opinions aren't going to make me change mine.
