    The Textile Industry

I used to work for textiles until I got laid off

for those that have worked in textiles or are familiar with it, you know Textiles is going down the tubes

Everything is being made from overseas

People that have worked 30 yrs etc are now or have lost their jobs etc

I saw this in the paper today

"Textile executives again called on the Bush administration Monday to impose trade treaty safeguards to protect their industry from a flood of inexpensive goods from China.

"We're here for one reason," Allen Gant, chief executive of Glen Raven Inc. in Burlington, told reporters. "We're worried about American jobs."

I used to work for Mr Gant. Part of me says Yes they might be worried about American jobs but are they really worried about their (head honchos) jobs & incoming money to them?

I don't know- the area where I live at was nothing but Textiles. That is all that people knew. Now plants have closed, some still struggling, people lossing their jobs, houses, etc.

It's sad. Does anyone here work or used to work in the textiles industry?

I now work for a construction company (office work) and even this business is slow. Some times it makes you wonder if you will have a job anywhere

I used to work in textiles... they laid off about 5,000 at once one time. I nolonger work there though. They are still in business considering they get most of their work done over seas anywaz...

My father was laid off from a textile mill... they have since shut it down, he was there over 30 years... They threw him away like he was nothing... NO RESPECT!

My FIL lost his job after being with a textile company for around 30 years also due to cutbacks...

I know alot of places have shut down and still are...

Times are hard...and they are getting worse...

The problem with the American Textile industry is the same with all industry, they cannot compete with less expensive foreign imports. And we are a consuming nation that likes our stuff. Plus we pay a living wage for this county and those in third world countries don't even need a $1 a day and they could be considered rich.

Plus the textile industry had a hard time changing with the times. Equipment was old and to moderize was expensive. So people went abroad.

I started out wanting to go into the textile business but I changed my mind when I realized that I would be out of a job before I got started.
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.

    I know what you mean

people that are in there 50's & 60's.........that is all that they know

    then one day, bam!

that happened just recently to a company called PILLOWTEX. People came in one day & they closed the doors. They had to jobs, no insurance.

You think if you've been with a company for 25, 30 yrs etc, they would appreciate you more

My mom is still working for UNIFI INC. Been there for 32 yrs and I'm surprised she still has her job but thankful she does

What state do you live in?

sounds like my state here in NC

this state grew up on textiles & tobacco and both aren't that good

I see homes up for sale left & right but not many people can afford to buy them

even if they are at a good price and interest rates are good

and the classifieds are terrible too

I live in VA. and work in the textile industry. Our plant was recently bought by a company from Canada. I just went back to work at this mill (worked in a furniture factory for a while). The people that are running the place now are mostly from India. We are working good but the people running the company now don't really care to much about us, the workers. The only reason they bought the plant in the first place was because our town and the governor gave them so much money to keep it here. I live in a very small town and we have had one big plant shut down last year. We only have four plants to work at here. If the start closing our little town will die out.
