Big Big Tired Mommy of 4
Dog owners... I need help!
We just got a dog. He is a 1 year old cocker spaniel. He is staying in a boarding facility at the vets office until we move next week. (our landlord here won't allow pets). Anyway, we go to see him a couple of times a week. This week when I rubbed him on his head he started crying. I bent down to see what was wrong and he had TONS of gooey crap draining from his ear. The vet checked him and he had a severe ear infection. So my question is what can I do to prevent this from happening again? I know that i will need to clean his ears a lot. I saw so many different products to use at the pet store but I have no idea which works the best. I would sincerely appreciate any ideas or suggestions!!!! He is such a sweet dog and it really hurt to see him in so much pain!!!!!

Have I found Mr. Right?
Check with your vet. They should have an ear wash for dogs that would help. I know they gave me some for my cat. She had lots of ear infections. Keep close check on the ears because if the infection is severe enough it could cause the eardrum to bust causing serious problems if no caught in time.

My dog gets ear infections a lot also, to clean her ears I prefer the EarClens pads, premoistened pads you use to wipe the ear out. I think it is the easiest way to do it. My dog doesn't get them that bad where there is stuff draining out of her ear, but she starts shaking her head a lot and itching her ears a lot. The vet gave us a prescription tube of Genotic B-C when I took her in for an ear infection over a year ago and said as long as I keep it in the fridge I can keep using it for future ear infections until the expiration date. The stuff is good until 06/03 and I have used it 3 times already (twice daily for 7 days each time). It is this gel-drop substance that you put in their ears and it works great on my dog.

Your vet should have given you a prescription ear drop. My dog had a yeast infection in one of her ears. Nothing draining, but she did scratch it all the time. Anyway, the vet gave us some drops that we were to put in her ear, rub it and then clean out with a cotton ball. We had to do this for a week. Good luck with your new little one! We just love our baby girl!

One of my doggies is a mutt poodle she has an excessive amount of long hair around the entrance to her ear, the vet said for me to trim this and to keep it trimmed that it can get down in the ear and cause infection. I have and she hasn't had an ear infection since also when you give your doggie a bath dry the inside of ears well. Good Luck with your new doggie.
