I am proud of us all! Thanks Loretta...you were one of the many who encouraged me. I also did it with the help of Allen Carrs book Easy way to stop smoking. GREAT book.

Wow, I never knew this thread was here! Thanks heartlvrs for telling me. I will be a permanent fixture here for awhile. Congrats to all of you who have quit! I'm still hanging in there, not one puff. DH told me tonight that he is going to quit also. Woohoo! He's my #1 cheerleader, so when he quits it will make a tremendous difference in my ability to resist and in our financial situation. I am so psyched. Thanks again!

Just wondered, do you still have cravings? Some people tell me they still have them years after they quit, others say they put them down and never wanted another.

..we both do, but it mostly when we "go out on the town" with friends, especially with friends that smoke (meaning going out for dinner and drinks and then continuing to hit other places)...hubbie says he also gets cravings when he talks on the phone for a long time (meaning with friends that live far away, and he's on the phone for a while)...for me it took something like 8 times to quit...i had actually quit a few times before since we've been together (and several times before i met him), but i always came back to it i think because there were always cigarettes available in my house...i was also in the restaurant business and recently got out this past summer to pursue my career, so that has helped me a lot...each time i quit, i diminished how much i was smoking (at one point i smoked over 2 packs a day)...by the time i quit i was only smoking 0-2 cigs a day, so making that final step was hard, but not as hard as other times when i had quit...hubbie was smoking 2 + packs a day when he quit and had never tried to quit before, so i am super proud of him---he used the losenges but only when he really felt he needed them as opposed to the dosage that the box recommends...

i think when they say the cravings never go away, that doesn't mean you crave them all the time like you do maybe now or when you smoked...they definitely diminish and are less strong and less often...but sometimes random things will bring on a craving, and perhaps always, but you have to be strong and get past that moment...what i always think of if i ever do have a craving is not only how upset i will be with myself later if i cave in, but also how i will have to go through with the withdrawls all over again (NOT FUN) if i start up again....the initial quitting process is no ball in the park, but you CAN do it....you always just have to remind yourself that you want to quit smoking more than you actually want that cigarette and don't let that cigarette make you think otherwise ..

...also i have found it helpful to look at smoking in a different way..meaning when i see people on the street smoking on their breaks or whatever, i think to myself, wow i let that little stick control me like that...that doesn't mean i am looking down on those people at all--i know exactly what it's like, but when you try to look at it from a non-smoker's POV, it really helps you to put things into perspective...

...ok enough with my novel for now, haha...hope that helped!

Thanks, Pj, it does help. I've been using my memory of withdrawal to keep me on th straight and narrow. I look at DH's pack laying there, and start thinking that just one won't hurt, but then I remind myself that all addicts say that, and I definately do not want to go through quitting ever again. I am using the lozenges at the moment and doing okay.

just checking in to see how you are doing nurse?..i know from experience trying to quite when your spouse still smokes is NOT easy...one thing that helps (me) too is that whenever i have had a craving, i think about how bad it actually makes me feel...i mean at first, for maybe the 1st half i loved it but then afterwards, it really sucks something out of me (does that make sense)?...like, it's never as good as it sounds when you are craving it....keep up the good work and be proud of yourself!!!
