I knew someone who had very large little kids, by their teen years they were fine. The little girl next door is 11 and about 150 pounds. Should she be placed in foster care? Has the system improved to ensure their safety and well being in foster care. We all know of cases where children were beaten, starved and sexually abused and even killed in foster care. Are the guide lines going to change regarding Where is the line drawn, parents who do not get their kids braces, etc.

The kid?
Not yet, since he's only 16 months., I think he's got a belly, but I guess most babies do.
I feel sorry for these obese kids., its not like they are doing the shopping, preparing the food, etc...
I was a chunky teen and it was he!! in middle and high school. I do not wish that on anyone.
I grew out of my chunky-ness and am now a skinny adult., but maybe I'm skinny because of the abuse I took as a teen. But then again, I've known people who were thin growing up who are gigantic now.
What do you think the percentage of obese parents with obese kids is? 90-95%? You rarely see an obese kid with skinny parents.
You have to think of the society as a whole as well. A nation full of people who couldn't walk a mile if their life depended on it. That's not good for a nation.
When 15-16yr olds are getting gastric bypass surgery, something is wrong!
I've seen teens who can barely walk they are so fat, literaly, they walk like penguins.
I don't think taking the kids away will solve anything, what are they gonna do, send'em all to a farm, where they work their butts off & eat fresh, healthy food? Hey that doesn't sound like a bad idea.
But this problem will never go away & its only going to get worse, we all know there is no real solution. People are going to raise their kids the way they want to.
Rudeness is the weak person's imitation of strength.

The children are learning from the parents, you can't teach an old dog new tricks per say, or can you? It starts with the parents wanting to change their lifestyle and eat healthy etc.. set a good example in front of the children. They can only eat what is set before them. You could teach a child healthier ways, but a small child can't cook or do the grocery shopping.

I believe this will scare kids into having eating disorders so they lose the weight and don't get taken away from their parents.

Ohio puts 200-pound third-grader in foster care
AP – 5 hrs ago
CLEVELAND (AP) — An Ohio third-grader who weighs more than 200 pounds has been taken from his family and placed into foster care after county social workers said his mother wasn't doing enough to control his weight. The Plain Dealer reports (http://bit.ly/t68M7D ) that the Cleveland 8-year-old is considered severely obese and at risk for such diseases as diabetes and hypertension.
The case is the first state officials can recall of a child being put in foster care strictly for a weight-related issue. Lawyers for the mother say the county overreached when authorities took the boy last week. They say the medical problems he is at risk for do not yet pose an imminent danger.
A spokeswoman says the county removed the child because caseworkers saw his mother's inability to reduce his weight as medical neglect.

My son is overweight, he is 11 and over 150 lbs. I myself and NOT overweight, I am 115 lbs. He eates very healthy, I do all that I can to control his weight. I go broke at the grocery store buying the healthy stuff, he begs for Hotpockets, but does not get that garbage. His juice is watered down, and he is only allowed one glass a day. Five days out of the week, we do not eat any starches with our dinner, just protein and veggies. So I suppose, they will want to take him away from me too

Then I do hope you are taking your son to the doctor, because if he eats that healthy as you say, and is that over weight, then maybe something is wrong medically.

Oh yes, he is under the supervision of his dr. They are in the process now of doing the thyroid testing and some other tests. He also is taller than I am, so he is not very round, just a big kid.

OK. I do think it is abuse in some cases.
I have a student-4th grade-maybe 5' 3". 210 lbs and gaining at last weigh in. The poor boy can barely walk-has lots of trouble with his ankles, etc. He also has asthma-and his mom is a chain smoker! He reeks of smoke-no wonder he can't breathe. He is a heart attack waiting to happen. His mom's fault? I absolutely say "yes!!"
On the other hand, my son (16) is 5'3 and only weighs 91 lbs. He is underweight-healthy, just very scrawny. It is a struggle to get him to eat-especially with his ADD meds. Protein shakes, milkshakes, fast food-anything to get calories in the boy
I guess an argument could be made to take him?
