Obama Cabinet official: Americans are children …

The last we heard from Steven Chu, Barack Obama’s Secretary of Energy, someone had to explain to him that oil policy fell within his “domain.”http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archi...0/1803006.aspx

Now that Chu has apparently mastered what exactly energy means, he now wants to act as a parent to recalcitrant Americans who stubbornly insist on making their own choices in life. The Wall Street Journal reports on Chu’s attitude towards the role of government, and especially his condescending attitude towards the governed: http://blogs.wsj.com/environmentalca...mes-to-energy/

When it comes to greenhouse-gas emissions, Energy Secretary Steven Chu sees Americans as unruly teenagers and the Administration as the parent that will have to teach them a few lessons.

Speaking on the sidelines of a smart grid conference in Washington, Dr. Chu said he didn’t think average folks had the know-how or will to to change their behavior enough to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

“The American public…just like your teenage kids, aren’t acting in a way that they should act,” Dr. Chu said. “The American public has to really understand in their core how important this issue is.” (In that case, the Energy Department has a few renegade teens of its own.)
That last bit of snark references an audit that the Department of Energy failed in its own facilities. They’re apparently unable to work modern climate-control systems to keep from air conditioning and heating facilities unnecessarily while unoccupied. Some buildings didn’t even have proper controls installed, and others just weren’t used properly. Equipment was left powered overnight, including computer monitors. The White House had similar problems with its audit.
With that humbling experience in mind, one might think that Chu and the Obama administration would approach energy policy with a little more humility. Nope! Instead, Chu talks about American citizens as if they cannot be trusted to make their own choices and the need to parent us rather than govern us with our consent. Most of us have already had parents and don’t see the need to have our elected officials take their place.
And if this is the attitude of the Obama administration on energy policy, just imagine what the attitude will be when they take charge of our health-care system.

This is nothing more than a slightly more honest look at the attitude of the Left when it comes to governance. It’s all about paternalism and condescension, and the belief that a group of elites should be appointed to rule over the unwashed and unschooled masses for their own good. That has never been consonant with the American experience, which allows the individual to make his own choices and live with the consequences. Chu gives us a good look at the liberal soul, and most Americans will not like what they see.

“The American public…just like your teenage kids, aren’t acting in a way that they should act,”
seems that we all need to "do as we are told" or face a "time out" ?

Our current health care system may not be perfect but it's so much better than any other country's. If you follow any of the recent posts you would know you can't trust a government run health care system.
Look at all the abuses done by government sponsored charities, ACORN, Americorps. Remember that the Obama's fired the inspector that was investigating Kevin Johnson for his misspending federal money in his charity.
It seems like so many people involved with these get rich by getting their greedy hands in the till. Remember that Michelle Obama worked in a hospital that turned away the poor, even though they were receiving federal funds.

Now you should all think about some of Obama's associations. Many of them have been pointed out time after time on this forum.

They couldn't handle a $40 tv coupon, so they did a $4,500 clunker program....

I do budgeting and financial advising for people. I always say that there are very, very few people in this country who can't save at least $5/day (150/month) WITHOUT changing their lifestyle at all. For those who do change their lifestyle and give up cable tv or the latest style of shoes, who shop at thrift stores and only do that when needed, who never eat out unless that somehow proves cheaper, etc the savings can be quadruple that number. Of course, even then that will only get someone about half the amount necessary to get coverage for a family of 4 without preexisting conditions, in good health, and with a high deductible.

I fully believe in personal responsibility. I also believe in compassion and reality. The reality is someone with diabetes or asthma or high blood pressure isn't going to get private insurance. The reality is very few people who have no income can afford $1000+ per month. The reality is very few people with no income want to be that way.

If the government screws up everything it touches and corrupts everything they do, if small government is better and people should be able to run their own lives, then why do so many conservatives want them in people's bedrooms and marriages?

Here is one. Mighty Mike - for those who have been around awhile - was born 2 1/2 months early. Insurance dropped us while he was in NICU. He has ongoing health issues, but he IS covered now. We are still paying on the $185,000 bill at the hospital. We do without cell phones, cable TV and movie nights. We don't go out much, and my kids have learned to "make it last, make do, or do without". No one is wearing $600 Air Jordans here.

What we need is for people to take care of themselves, develpoe that work ethic that got this country through the Great Depression and two World Wars instead of whining about how they "need" this "deserve" that and look for someone to "take care" of them.

JMHO - unpopular as it may be.... eaceout:

That is a convient cop out statement .... it may apply to POLIITIANS and certain small fundemental groups but unfair to the greater majority of those who call themselves "conservatives".

There are some problems within the medical industry.....'pre-existing' conditions is just one of them.

If certain things were to change, healthcare could become more affordable for all.

The reality is very few people with no income want to be that way.
I too don't think that children grow up saying "I want to be poor" either....but I also don't see 'children' be instilled with "what can I do now so I won't have to be poor in the future"......

If parents instilled in their children to work hard, get educated and be responsible..........there would be a lot less 'poor people'....and yes there are 'exceptions' to those who have worked hard, studied, etc. and yet through no fault of their own, are poor. But that is NOT the majority.
