    Michigan phases out "flashing red"

    Michigan Phasing Out Flashing Red

    POSTED: 8:32 am EST February 1, 2008
DETROIT -- When it comes to turning left, Michigan drivers will have to learn new habits in order to get it right.

Federal safety officials are requiring that Michigan phase out signals using flashing red lights for left-turning traffic.

The state will replace them with a four-phase system of left-turn arrows.

Left-turn arrows will start with flashing yellow, meaning turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

Next is steady green, meaning turn left turn.

That will be followed by steady yellow, meaning prepare to stop or complete the left turn, followed by red -- or stop.

    YES!!! Its about freaking time!!
I HATE making left turns at lights like that. They go from a flashing red meaning stop, make sure its safe and then turn to FULL RED. Just like that. NO WARNING AT ALL. You could be sitting in the middle of the road and it'll just turn red. Bull shit if you ask me.
    Its about damn time.

It is, its scary. You know how when you have a green arrow it'll turn yellow then to red? Well not here, there is no arrow at all. When the regular light turns green, the turning traffic light just blinks red, and it doesnt change to yellow at all. Just blinking then solid red.

Me, too. We don't have flashing anything...well, unless it's late at night when they turn all the lights onto flashing yellow...Normally, though, we have arrows for left turns and they work just like regular traffic lights (red, yellow and green).

I do think this is a good idea. I'm sure it will cause a lot less accidents this way
