I have seen that alot on Ebay. I always try to find out what shipping is before I buy because of that. Actually what they are doing I don't think is allowed on there but I am not positive on that. I have seen items for .99 with postage of 7.00 and higher already.

I don't understand your point. Why didn't you factor the $7 shipping into your bid?? The reason for high shipping and handling these days is (1) higher eBay fees and (2) higher PayPal fees. Once you think about HOW MUCH IT COSTS to list and accept your payment (obviously, you are not a seller), then you would understand. To list, you have to pay a minimum of 50 cents (25 cents to list if you start at the ultra-low one cent to 99 cent range plus 25 cents for the gallery). Then there are eBay's final value fees and PayPal fees. Then you have to find or buy an envelope, package it, and run it over to the post office before an already busy workday. I sell on eBay all the time and DO have to charge a high handling fee to help make up for the fees...especially since that allows me to recoup on eBay final value fees (end bids will be lower so FVFs will be lower).
I expect the buyer to factor the shipping in before making the bid. For example, if you are willing to pay only $10 for a certain item, but it's $10 to ship and a $0.99 starting bid, DON'T BID ON IT because you'll have to pay at least $11 for it.
It's called "shipping AND HANDLING" for a reason. If you didn't read or didn't ask about the shipping rate, it sounds like your fault. It doesn't really how much it cost the seller to send you the package, $7.00 shipping and handling is $7.00 shipping and handling. Isn't the most important part that you received it? Who cares what the stamp in the corner says? You thought it was fine when you bid on it...

Fees don't add up to $6 over the price she paid. Sorry, but that is outrageous.
I do agree that you should not have bid if you knew that the item was $7 shipping. I have passed on many items due to high shipping, which is fine with me.
I only charge $.85 for "handeling" for printing postage and for driving to the PO. It is MY choice to accept paypal and I personally am not passing that off on others.

I always try to factor in shipping handling because in most cases even with the excessive charge in the end its cheaperfor the overall item anyway.

I always check the shipping price first before I bid, cause I've seen some outrageous shipping charges for things like a pack of stickers(shipping was $4.50) but sometimes the bid prices are way lower than shipping prices cause the items are heavy..I try to charge low prices for things like jeans, cause I know it's expensive to ship them...So if I start the jeans at .99 and you win, you will probably end up paying $7.00 or more for shipping...*S*, Rebekka
P.S. I forgot to say that I don't agree with having higher shipping costs, just to cover fees etc, the fees should be figured into the price of the bid, let's say you want at least 1.00 for your item, then add .40 or so to it, to cover the costs instead of adding in the fees to shipping..JMO..*S*, Rebekka

Always check out the cost of shipping before bidding. Sometimes the shipping will make the actual purchase out of line. I don't buy if I think that the shipping is more than I would spend to ship something (including handling charges).

i thought the product was coming from over sea's,thats why i paid the $7!!,but when it came from the state above me for .83,yes i was mad!!as for being an ebay seller, yes i am and my shipping and cost is always around the $1-$2 mark ,unless the object is heavier.i do figure in my pay-pal and my ebay cost+postage thats why my starting bids are .99 and my postage is $1-$2. thanks for letting me get this out!!

I am newer member- but have been viewing this site for like 3 yrs. So hello!! Anyways, I sell alot on Ebay and buy quite a bit also. Email him and ask him why he charged you 7.00 for something that cost him >1.00 to send. You can always leave neutral or neg. feedback also. I have had shipping charges refunded quite a few times because I asked. Good Luck!

It's like this on A LOT of items...
Sellers want to grab your attention by having a low priced/bid item. I was looking at hard drives on Ebay the other day. I wanted something around the 40 to 80 gig range for a secondary pc. Prices ranged from $30 to $50 but the shipping was anywhere from $12 to $18 so with shipping factored in the drive was about the same price as you'd by from NewEgg, where I get most of my pc parts. Average shipping at NewEgg for a hard drive was $4 to $5.
I know Ebay's prices went up and I know what PayPal charges too but quadruple shipping prices are a rip off

What they are doing is trying to avoid ebays fees and it's against the rules. I won't bid on an item until I know how much the shipping is. I don't understand why all ebay sellers don't have that shipping fee thing listed on their page. A lot do but then there are those who don't. It makes it so much easier for everyone. That way you don't need to bother the seller by emailing them to ask them how much shipping is going to cost. You can contact ebay and let them know that the seller is trying to avoid ebay fees by charging an outrageous amount for shipping. They will look into it.

As an ebay seller I will say that charing $7.00 for shipping when it was only $.80 cents is ridiculous.
I will say however that when I figure s/h on my items I factor in packaging fees (as I purchase padded envelopes), ebay listing/paypal fee, and gas only because I ship everyday so that the buyer gets their stuff fast. I would never charge like that.
My handling fee is not more than $2.00 at best! There are times where I've underfigured the shipping fee itself and I've had to eat $$$.
As an ebay buyer - I have been burnt by not asking first about shipping myself. I also always factor shipping into the price. I also get turned off from a particular seller when I see they are charging outrageous prices for something that I know won't cost that much to ship.

many of the items i seel on ebay are NWT that i have found dirt cheap at clerance sales. I have higher shipping/handeling but i also put a breif explanation. IE: Shipping & Handeling willl be flat rate $5.00-$10.00 to cover SHIPPING and actual price PAID for this item.
I've had nobody complain yet, although most the items I've sold have been BRAND NAME clothing and when they see the ticket prices adding up to much more then the s/h and bid amount, I doubt anyone would complain.
I do agree that 7.00 for a 4.00 item seems a bit high, BUT you agreed to that shipping price when you bid. Be more aware of the auction prices. When i've noticed someone adding on much higher rates, and they had muiltiple items I wanted, I've emailed them and they have agreed to a 'discount' so thats an option as well.
Do let him/her know that you feel a bit cheated and be sure to explain why.
Good luck on all future purchases!

Yes, always check on the shipping. I had been bidding on coupons recently. Most charge 37 cents to 60 cents for shipping. But one person was charging $4.95 for shipping for the same amount of coupons. Most of the time I can understand a higher shipping amount but not that time.

I've got one for you. I was looking at a print or painting recently. I don't even think the frame was included. Anyway, the starting bid was ridiculously low, so I scrolled down to see what shipping&handling were going to be. a whopping $45 for shipping! Can anyone say fee avoidance? Beware of penny auctions....they recoup it somehow.

Usually I don't mind higher s+h charges, if the overall price is still reasonable. I've found some things shipped from a city 3 hours away would cost me a lot more than having it shipped from a few states over, and I usually won't touch the higher shipping, even if the sale price is lower, just for principle. I have bought some things where I paid $5 for 'actual' shipping and found that it really cost $1, but I wouldn't have paid it, if I didn't think it was okay.
I do understand what you're saying, though. Sometimes you can find overseas shipping that's cheaper than within the states lol. And some handling fees are ridiculous.
guesswho!

Personally I dont use Ebay...the fees are too high, so I stay away. Just curious, OP...you said you thought the pkg was coming from overseas- did the auction details lead you to believe this? If so I would complain to Ebay.
BTW, I prolly would have been a bit upset about the pstg as well. Was there anything detailing what pstg was in the auction? With pstg rates cont'g to increase it's hard to find decent deals b/c often pstg kills the deal...JMHO
Good luck in the future with your buys.

now to go on topic!
this is what i see as fair:
if you are selling nib (not old nib either):
include the cost of purchasing the item in your handling (seeing you can return it if no one bids or pays) if it is a nominal amt...not if it is 400...that would be fee avoidance...that case set a reserve.
all items:
insertion fee
picture fees
paypal basic fee...not percent
actual shipping cost
packaging cost
transport cost (pick up or drop off)
NOT OK:
final values fee from paypal or ebay.

I agree! I also think charging for time and gas is a little bit greedy. Should the buyer get a discount for the time it takes them to go to the post office to mail their payment (not everyone uses paypal) or for the gas it takes them to get there. Let's not forget the cost of the stamp and the envelope. It works both ways.

I buy and sell on ebay. I'm very careful to read everything on the listing page. If the shipping is more than I can handle, I don't buy it. You really need to know the shipping charges beforehand. If there is no shipping charge listed, I normally won't even bid, unless its something I REALLY want, in which case, I contact the seller.
On buying.... since I buy so much on ebay, and I'm a shopaholic, I keep all the boxes and packing material. When I sell something, I use those, and I only charge actual shipping.
btw... I LOVE the US Postal Service online. I weigh, measure, and get postage online, so I only have to go to the post office to drop it off.

If I am not mistaken they will also pick up your things to be shipped so you do not have to go to the post office. I could be wrong but it would be worth it to check in to it.

The OP should be mad at Feebay. They are the ones who make sellers do this crazy shipping stuff. If the fees weren't so high sellers would not need to charge outrageous shipping prices to maintain profit.
I use to come up short on shipping. I was the happy go luck ebayer who just put in the standard shipping amount until I start realizing that the paypal fees, listing fee, FVF were eating up a large chunk of my profit. And I also miscaculated shipping a few times, so I invested in a scale.
Now I don't play with shipping. I charge a handling fee, but it's not outrageous at all. I make a note of this in every auction stating I do charge a handling fee in BOLD.
One thing you need to learn about ebay is that if you agree to terms of an auction before reading the description(which is the case with most people), you are setting yourself up for disaster. You should know exactly how much shipping you have to pay before you even bid. If someone does not list it then you email them.
I never bid on auctions that have no shipping listing. This is an absolute no-no IMO. I feel that as long as I don't have any suprises I'm fine. If I know actual shipping and look on the package and theirs a cheaper amount I don't think twice because I knew what I was getting into when I purchased the item.

I sell on ebay and don't overcharge on shipping but I do charge for peanuts, air pockets and other shipping materials and I don't think that people factor that stuff in. It is expensive and most of the time you can't get it on sell.
AS far as ebay checking into the high shipping they won't. It tells you that in the help section. If you think a person shipping costs are way to high email them. That's why the ask the seller a question link is there. I've used it plenty and most of the time they lower it a but I understand about ebay fee's. They are way over charging because they are "ebay" and think they can. Wait, you'll see there is a better way. Yahoo used to be the bomb until google came along so I'll bid my time and wait until that better auction site comes along.

I personally think it is a buyer's responsibility to look at S&H prices before they bid. I am a seller and buyer, and when I buy, I always factor in the S&H costs. For example, I like to buy gift cards online. Let's just say I am willing to pay 75% of the gift card value. If it is a $100 gift card and S&H is $5.00, then I will bid up to $70.00. I don't care if he pays $0.37 to ship it, as I paid my 75%, so I am happy. If the $100 gift card had $0.37 S&H on it, then I would bid up to $74.63. Either way, it is 75%.
I really feel it is so unfair when people leave negatives for overcharging S&H. I have not experienced this, but I definitely can see how someone would feel. I do understand why a buyer would be mad, as I am not happy either if I get charged $8 but it cost $0.60, but I will get over it immediately and leave great feedback. I don't think new eBayers understand how important feedback is to sellers, and just leaving one because you are angry with the S&H costs even though you agreed upon them and paid for them before hand, is just wrong. If your against high S&H costs, then just simply don't bid on the item. I don't care if someone charges $0.01 or $100.00 for S&H, as I have an amount I am willing to pay, and if the bid price and the S&H price go over the amount, then I am not going to bid. I think people need to view it like this, and then problems won't arouse. Know how much your willing to pay, and just look at it as I PAID $8 for an item (price I was willing to pay) rather than I PAID $0.01 (what a great deal!) but I PAID $7.99 for S&H (what a rip!).
Also, yes, it is illegal on eBay to list something $0.01 and charge $99.99 for S&H to save on eBay fees. You can report these auctions through eBay's help section.
This is just my opinion. Everybody has their own opinion, and many many people use eBay, so I can imagine this thread going on forever and ever with everybody putting in their opinions.
