How much time should he serve??

Two women are walking across the street, through a cross walk, and are hit by a drunk driver.

He ran a red light at 70mph, hitting and killing both of them instantly. Both bodies were thrown approx 100 feet in the air (according to police reports), one landing in the oncoming traffic lane, and the other alongside the road.

They were hit so hard that the one woman HAD to have her casket closed during her funeral, and the other had to be cremated.

He was drunk, underage, driving on a learners permit past curfew, with friends in the back of the van who obviously had no common sense to take the keys from him, or to stay out of the van themselves. They were on their way to their THIRD party for the night.

He told his friends to leave before the police got there.....and they did. He tried to leave, but his van wouldn't start.

His trial is coming up soon.......

How much time do YOU think he should get??

He's 17. At the time of the accident, he had his license for 4 1/2 months.

See, this happened because of immaturity and stupidity, but at the end of the day, innocent lives were lost.

Was this the first brush with the law for this kid or has he been a problem?

Perhaps some jail time but I think more importantly a very lengthy and intensive public service while living away from home with rehab. He should see upfront first hand at a morgue, a facility with injured and disabled people who cannot leave the facility due to health. He should be forced to care for them.

He should be forced to go some gruesome accident scenes.

He should also have to make a check out (even if it's $1) to his victim's relatives every week for the next 30 years.

He should never forget his vicitms nor the damage he caused. He should also undergo drug & alcohol testing for many years. If it's violated, mandatory jail.

He should also go to high schools and share his experiences.

I really believe they should raise the age for getting a drivers license. Not all teens are immature but most are. They just don't think anything can happen to them.

As far as I know, this one his first brush with the law. (Or at least, the first time he was caught).

I know what his lawyer is asking for as far as sentencing, but I don't want to say just yet. Obviously, I'm hoping for more than what they want. Jail time and some community service are part of it.

He was tested for drugs at the hospital, but I don't know the results yet. There was something in the back of the van that's usually used in meth labs....so he was tested for that.

The only problem with that is that he didn't care that he was too young to drink, so he probably wouldn't have cared if he was too young to drive.

So this kid was involved with more than just drinking on a regular basis...

That's what we're thinking. The trial had already been postponed once, because they were waiting for the reports to come back from the hospital, and the police wanted to talk more with witnesses and those in the van.

According to his (so-called) friends, it's not the first time he's been drunk.

I'm sorry if this is connected to you somehow, family, friends, witnessed it... Sounds horrible.
So they found the others in the van and have talked to them, that is good. They should get some probation out of it to tech them a lesson too. I think they should charge him as they would an adult in this case. Not anything like the death penalty but I think he should sit in jail for about 30 years anyway. Doesn't even seem like nearly enough though.
