If it was an auction, then the intent was to sell to the highest bidder, thus getting them the highest amount for their cause.
Too bad it wasn't a win/win for both school counties, but the seller was looking for the highest amount...an auction. Otherwise, they could have reached out to other counties and solicited them to purchase instead of opening it up to "the public".

Um, I'm talking about the actual item itself. If its a desk, its intended use was to be used as a desk, not scrap metal. Someone was trying to purchase it for its intended use (to use as a desk).

But apparently it's worth more than just being a desk, which previously it was used as, but now it has more value to both the seller and the scrapper, and not as much value to the other county (or they would have bought it). As I said, too bad it couldn't be win/win for both counties.
If it had sold for less, the selling county would then have to raise that money (the difference) for their needs, such as take it out of their educational budget or raise school taxes. Would you want to pay extra in your taxes so another county could purchase a desk below it's market value?
But I understand the vent, too bad it didn't work out as a win/win, but the scrapper isn't the 'bad guy'.

The only person it would have been "better for" is the county that didn't purchase it, everyone else would take "the loss".

Here some idiot climbed up on to a roof of a metal building that was for sale to steal electrical wire & was electructed. His body was discoved over a week later by a guy who went to the same building to do the exact same thing. They are breaking into people's houses to steal wire & pipes.

I once worked for a company that was acquired by another. The building and all the furnishings were to be sold. Many of us wanted to bid on some of the items like file cabinets, etc. as they were of a high quality. Ultimately, the company sold them all for pennies on the dollar to a scrap metal dealer because it was quicker and easier. They certainly would have made more money if the items would have been auctioned off, but they chose simply not to deal with it. I consider that a waste but it was their choice. I couldn't blame the scrap metal dealer for making a good deal then and I can't blame them now.
In this situation as posted by the OP...while I agree that it would be nice if others could have gotten the items at a good price, I still don't think it is the scrap metal dealer's fault for doing business. And, I think the school district was best served over all by making the most money.

Oh, so did they wind up costing more in the auction then they would have if purchased new? If not, they would still have come out ahead by buying a few of the items they wanted. They may not have been able to get as much, but still could have purchased some items & saved themselves some money.

What I can't figure out is why were they selling stuff to begin w/???? If the items were still good to use and were practically new and nothing wrong w/ them etc why didn't the school just keep the stuff to put into the new building or give it to another school. It seems to me that whatever money they did get on selling thier stuff they now have to use to buy stuff all over and probably more than what they originlly paid for it to begin w/ since prices have gone up etc. I am sure that the money they did raise isn't going to buy books for students, or supplies for the teachers but a fancy schwancy chair for some big wig Superintendent position

they are building new school building here ... nothing from the old school will be moved because the reason we need all new is due to mildew, mold, and absetsos. It may be that because of these concerns ( and future liability issues ) they didn't want the items to be used for their intended purposes.

I have no idea why they aren't allowed to take anything with them from the old building to the new. Something to do with the money they are getting to build the new school, but it seems like such a waste to me. Like I said, so much of the stuff that was sold was new or like new.

Well...I definitely agree that it was wasteful. But, my vent would be aimed at the wasteful school district, not the scrap metal buyers who were just doing their job.
