Buying junk food or soda in moderation while on Food Stamps is no big deal. Most people that receive FS's have children. Don't know about you, but my kids always enjoyed a treat every so often. Just because a child is from a poor family or just because someone is poor enough to qualify for FS's mean they should not be able to enjoy some soda or some tater chips or even a good cookie.

And this is my tax dollars they are spending and I am one of those that is working 2 jobs...oh, wait, make that 3 jobs! I don't think it is the governments place to tell me what to eat and I don't think it is their place to place demands on someone that may need assistance. Personally, I don't believe in the social services like welfare and food stamps, but as long as they are in place I don't think anyone receiving assistance should have demands put on them that you or me do not have. And I think some of you may be forgetting that chances are these people that are on FS's are pretty likely to be spending THEIR tax dollars that they have paid in over the years before falling on hard times.

The only way to ensure that people purchase only nutritious food is to make them shop at a Government run food bank that they can only redeem credits not something that can be turned into cash to "pay" for the food.

As for people getting a hissy over someone not paying taxes my BFF has NOT paid a red cent of taxes for over 25 years - why? She kept popping out kids and her DH refused to work so they could get their big bonus check every year. Oh and yes for many many years they did get food stamps that went for steak for her & DH.

At least most illegals work - I wish they would force the ones on welfare and government housing to do those jobs - Oh Wait they are too good for those jobs.

Why should a person who is working possibly 2 or more jobs, budgeting, scrimping, etc. to support themselves have to pay taxes and see others using those funds frivolously? That's not fair. I don't think anyone here would deny a hungry person a nutritious meal, but would you give a hungry or starving child soda for breakfast? Food stamps are for the basics, soda is not a "basic". "Basics" should be nutritious, not "party food/junk food".

Military, etc., yes, as long as I am paying taxes or am a citizen in a democratic government, I do have a say in how my government operates and what guidelines should be set. It's called voting. Voicing my opinions on how my government conducts itself is my right. Sticking your head in the sand or looking the other way about what your government is doing and where funds are going is not a very bright thing to do.
Yes, it is pathetic for someone like yourself to think they can tell another person what to buy. You can sit there all day long and pretend like all your tax dollars are going to feed every single individual. Like I said, most people after they get their tax returns aren't even paying enough in to feed a dog for a year. So, who are you to actually believe you have every right under the sun to modify what people eat or drink? I'm willing to guess, you aren't even employed.

If people would worry about themselves as much as they worry about what everyone else is doing, this world just might be a pleasant place to live.

The whole military statement went over your head.

I'm done - No matter what, you & people of your caliber will always believe you have the right to run other peoples lives cause you are paying in taxes or pretending to pay taxes.
Don't worry about what people think. They don't do it very often.

Sadly nutritious food is so much more expensive than healthy food. I don't buy near as much fresh fruits and veggies because I simply can't afford it.

I always thought it was LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Not GUARENTEED HAPPINESS and all the soda pop you can drink!
If you want free soda, get a job at McD's, they'll give you all the soda you want to drink.

With 1 in 3 Americans being Obese, I think they need to make food stamps, like they do WIC, ie: This stamp is for a gallon of Milk, this stamp is for a pound of apples, this stamp is for 64ozs of orange juice., etc...

I didn't read this whole thread....I just want to say I LOVE Pepperpot!!! LOL

I agree that people when using food stamps should be limited to nutrient rich foods....if they want a treat they should budget for it like the rest of us, and not use public assistance for it! Also I don't understand why they are allowed to use a food stamp card at a gas station.....the mark up of food items in these types of stores is outrageous!!!

That isn't true...WIC limits what people can get. And here registers are programed to "know" what portion of your purchase qualifies for food stamps...all they have to do is add junk food as not being allowed...this day and age of computers its a simple thing really.

You have every rigth to your pet peeve. God know I have enough of them.
One of my pet peeves is that junk food is actually cheaper than nutritious stuff. Would you have rather that they bought a juice drink with high fructose corn syrup? I personally don't see much difference.

ah hah... but then one would b!tch about them buying water bottles, when you can get it out of the faucet.

wow, here I go... I work, I have a job, I provide for my children, pay all the bills etc... But I do recieve foodstamps in assistance to take up the slack, especially food, for us that I just put simply, could not, or would have a extremely hard time on my own.

And you know what, I don't care who slams me here. But for this christmas, I treated my family by buying ingredients for treats for the holidays, such as chocolate chips, fudge stuff, chips and dip etc... and I DO NOT feel one bit guilty about it, because guess what? I pay taxes also. And my family got a some extra goodies for them for the holidays.
But, I will say, other than that, I am responsible on what I buy, and make it last, and spread it out to last all month for us to eat on.

oh, and OMG, I had to buy the diet cranberry sierra mist that they ONLY sell once a year during the holidays, shoot me now!!

Yes mary jo, it is disgusting that junk food is much cheaper than fresh fruits and veggies, more healthy stuff. The government wants to try and butt in about how we need to eat more nutricious, then maybe they should try and figure a way so we can afford the good stuff to eat. I was thrilled this christmas season that they had tons of different kinds of apples for only .99 cents a pound. I always have carrots in the house etc.... but I could care less about what the person in front of has in their cart. I worry about whats in mine.

I thought you couldn't file taxes, claim, or get back tax returns if you didn't have a w-2 (from a job)?

And I actually know a couple of mexicans (legal) who arn't afraid to "work" for their money, and sweat there butts off and don't gripe about it.
