You just described the National Guard. There is no such job in the SS. There is most definitely no such job with regards to the POTUS and his family. The SS agents do have occasional on call shifts. It's figured in with their salary. They work their regular shifts but every once in a while they are on call as well. If they get called or not does not change their pay. They are salaried employees in government service.
I know what I am talking about here Pepper. You're just making guesses now as to how the job and pay structure for POTUS security works. I'm not.

Pay and Work Schedule
Special agents are generally hired at the GL-7 or GL-9 grade levels depending on qualifications and education. Based on those grade levels and the assigned geographic area, the 2010 starting salary range is $43,964 - $74,891.
An additional 25% Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) will be added to locality pay. While assigned to field offices special agents are normally assigned to work a 40-hour (normal business) workweek (e.g., 9:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.), Monday through Friday. Due to the receipt of LEAP, special agents usually work an average of two additional hours per day. During certain assignment the hours worked by special agents will vary depending on the nature of these assignments, which include, but are not limited to, conducting criminal investigative and protective assignments and/or being assigned to a protective detail. Special agents are required to work hours other than normal business hours (e.g., 12 a.m.-8 a.m., 4 p.m.-12 a.m., 10 a.m.-6 p.m., 6 a.m.-2 p.m., 2 p.m.-10 p.m., etc.) with the addition to 2 or more LEAP hours, on a daily basis.
Conditions of Employment
Special agents will be required to carry out assignments in the areas of protection and investigations; work long hours in undesirable conditions on short notice; travel away from home for periods ranging from one to 30 days or longer. Additionally, special agents may be requested to work undercover assignments.

The point was that when they travel, there is extra security through the SS....whether it be the core agents or the outer agents (still part of SS). There is no set budget (salary) for a set amount of agents regardless of the detail/event/travel/etc. Of course the budget increases and the extra staff (i.e. SS agents included) increase as well.
The way you are explaining it is there are only 10 agents (whatever arbitrary number) to cover him running from the WH for a cup of coffee or traveling for a week's long infomercial tour across the U.S. and the cost is the same This is not.
I too have a clue.

That's not at all what I am saying. I am saying let's say there are 300 agents in the WH. When he's in the WH 20 agents are scheduled to guard him and the rest are performing other duties be it guarding Michelle or the kids or coordinating with local law enforcement or checking into security for the next venue. When they travel they might take 50 agents. They don't hire rent a cops. They take 50 of those 300 agents and the remaining 250 are still back in DC. The budget for agent salaries is a set budgetary amount and doesn't increase when the President travels somewhere. All 300 agents receive the same pay (for themselves, not saying they all make $1000/week) whether they are in the WH or traveling with the POTUS.
I hate to break it to you but I don't really think you do have a clue about this. You are guessing and speculating and assuming and you are wrong. Heck, I linked to the Secret Service website and you're still arguing against it. What more of a source do you want??

What you linked was a job description, not their hiring and SS implementation practices for details/assignments/events. There are many job descriptions within the SS.
BTW You are not breaking anything to me. If you want to brag and proclaim, be my guest. I don't need to brag, I know what I know and they are facts.

Well if a job description from the Secret Service website of what being in the secret service entails isn't enough then please feel free to post a link that disputes it.
How is it bragging to post the job description of someone else's job?

Instead of worrying about paying a few secret service guys whose job it is to protect the president, I would be worrying about who is paying to keep this unnecessary war going in the middle easy.

I worry about how all of my (our) money and resources are spent. (I think we all should, it's all ours.) It's larger in some areas than others, but it all adds up and is distressing when it is unnecessary and wastefully spent.

I wonder where the 2 bushes spent it. When Clinton left, there was a surplus in the budget. The economy is not Obamas fault.
