My granddaughter got burned tonight
My granddaughter and her mother were making instant mashed potatoes and she spilled the boiling water on her hand and arm. They took her to the ER where they put cream on her hand and arm and wrapped it. They didn't give her anything for pain even after my daughter asked them for something. They said she had second degree burns on the top of her hand, and underneath on her wrist. It made a huge blister that has already broken. They didn't tell her if it would scar, when to take her to her regular physician , etc. Not giving her pain med just makes me furious. She is only 8, there are pain meds out there for 8 yr old children. The US is one of the worst countries for under treating pain. Burns are very painful as anyone who has ever had one can tell you. I will see her tomorrow.

Your daughter needs to bring your granddaughter home and then go back to the hospital and speak to the Drs supervisor. That is OUTRAGEOUS that a child has 2nd degree burns and was not given anything for pain or instructions. The squeaky wheels get the oil, I sincerily help your granddaughter gets to feeling better soon, that is terrible

I picked up a flat iron by the hot part not knowing it had just been unplugged and burnt the tips of my fingers. I had never felt any pain like that, And it still hurt 5 days later. I do not know how an 8 year old can control that pain cuz I sure couldn't and I'm grown. That poor poor baby! I will say your daughter must be a better person than I am because I would have had someone by the throat. I will keep her in my prayers and hope the pain goes away quickly.

Oh that poor baby. I understand her pain. I had one recently in a very sensitive part of my body, nothing X-rated happened, but I hurt horribly. I couldn't wear a bra for 2 weeks.
Hugs for the little one.
Would a get better soon card train help her feel better?
Insanity is hereditary. You get it from your kids.

Sometimes you have to keep at the doc until you get an answer. Always, always, always insist! Whether it's for you or for your child, you must insist until you can get results. I hope your daughter has since made some calls and gotten some kind of pain meds and information.

Remember when my dad burned his leg from his crotch down to the ankle. They treated him and sent him home that night with no meds. The next day his doctor called and told my sister to bring him back. He couldn't believe the ER doctor sent him home like that because of the burn, his history with infection on his legs and his diabetes not to mention the pain. He chewed the doctor out about it and admitted my dad to the hospital.
I can't believe they didn't give your grand daughter any pain meds. She must have been in a lot of pain. You would have thought out of compassion they would have given them to her. I hope she feels better and it heals fast. Bless her heart.

I am not saying this is your grand daughters case at all, but, when was younger I worked a a deli that had a broaster. To clean it, you had to let the oil drop down in the bottom, cool, and dump it. Then, you had to put water in it and let it com up to temperature(350 degrees) so you could scrub the inside of it. Then you dump the water into a bucket to get rid of it in th oil recycler.
I was taking the scalding hot water out to the recycler and slid and spilled the water on the inside of my wrist. I had about a 1"X5" area where the skin just peeled. By the time my boss got me to the emergency room, the pain had dulled to a tollerable level, I am not sure why, maybe some nerve damage, or just being scared so bad by the 1 mile trip to the emergency room. They put silvadene cream on the burn, bandaged it up, and sent me home without any additional cream or pain meds. I did fine without, not that I probably would have taken them anyway. I mostly didn't scar, I have one tiny little spot in a crease on my wrist near my hand that isn't exacly like the rest, but is not noticeable.
I hope your Grand daughter has the experience I did and doesn't have severe pain, or scarring.

They gave her half a lortab and later in the early morning hours they gave her the other half and this morning when I saw her she said it doesn't hurt when she keeps it still. It is wrapped up for the most part but I could see a long red streak going up her arm but it wasn't blistered. My daughter showed me a picture of it on her phone she made on the way to the hospital and it had blisters bigger than my thumb on it.
Children bounce back so quickly though. She was sad because she can't go swimming.

If she has a red streak up her arm that means she's got an infection or she's having a reaction to the Silvadine (i'm guessing that was the "cream" they used.) She needs to be seem by her primary care Dr. ASAP. We had two burn victims come in yesterday one from hot cooking oil to the face and the other boiling water to the chest. One got pain med the other didn't. We usually leave it up to the patient to request pain med before we dish it out. Unfortunately the county I live in Opioids are our Heroine so our Dr.'s are leary of giving it out. And if it had been an 8 year old child we would not have given her anything stronger than Tylenol or Ibuprofen.
