What I think is people need to stop blaming Obama (and I'm NOT a fan) and the rest of their woes on everyone but themselves. I talked to a guy today who has not had a job in 2 years and yet blames Obama. Every day I get calls from people who throw the race card about how they can't pay. I'm sorry but your nationality, race, origin or creed has NOTHING to do with this. If you sign a legal binding contract, well guess what hi ho hi ho it's off to work you go to pay your debt. Yes, people get laid off and/or fired, there's unemployment for that - unless you're self employed. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. You don't realize until you actually DO this job that people and their excuses are a dime a dozen...it's never actually their fault. I've heard it all... a woman last week told me she can't pay because her dog died. Yes really. I understand vet bills and such, but when I asked if she had anyone else able to help her she stated her husband could... but yet no paymnt in 3 months.
Everyone is so quick to judge and say we're evil, we're this or that, whatever buzz word the media is using now but have not worked a day in my shoes (I believe you know who you are). I dare ANYONE to work a week, no, make that a DAY in HIGH RISK collections and then tell me you're still all Merry Poppins. I WILL go the extra mile to help you, but I refuse to help someone who will not help themselves. People complain that we as CC companies don't care, we're only out for ourselves, etc. etc. etc. so if you hate us, why deal with us???? It's not a requirement for you to get a CC... and yet when you can't pay... it's our fault.
If I had even 3 people in a given day and I work 5 days a week own that they owe the debt I'd be floored. Most people tell us that it's our fault... because their APR is too high... nope sorry... YOU as a consumer drive that APR, what you do with your OTHER obligations is what determines it. You didn't get that dream home because we reported you? Sorry about your luck... pay your bill. And the thing is CITI is one of the most generous banks out there... we LOSE money on our hardship programs... multiple times a day I waive late fees, finance charges and lower APRS from 29.99 to 0% and that's good for 5 YEARS people. YES, I give people 5 YEARS to pay their debt... but yet I'm oh so mean...and these are debts that are normally $1500.00. 5 years to pay that off... do the math. There are no late fees, no finance charges...I practically give you the bank.
And apparently, I need to say for a 4th time...that I AGREE I did wrong... anyone else want to point that out??

late fees, finance charges and APRS from 29.99
While I believe the above mentioned are proper business practices....I think they are way too high and banks are greedy in that respect.
As for the banks writing off the bad debts, they just add/dump those 'bad debts' onto the others in these fees and 'deduct' the 'losses' on paper tax time. Trust me, the banks are making money.
But people should pay their bills and live within their means.

Wendy Lou I do agree with most of what you are saying however these credit card companies raised rates for no reason on people who do pay their bills on time. However congress DID mandate credit card changes HOWEVER they allowed the credit card companies months to up their rates.
You are correct that once you know the interest rates are going up then YOU & YOU alone make the decision whether or not to use the credit cards. If you make the debt, pay it.
OK however what about someone like me who had credit cards opened up under my name without my knowledge or approval with statements being sent to a different address than mine? This started 3 years ago & I only found out about it last year right around this time. the police don't want to be involved b/c their opinion is that I should have filed a report sooner. How could I when I didn't know? I have called & written the credit card companies asking for copies of statements only to be refused. I have spent the past year trying to work with these banks to work payoff's without any success at all.
I'm screwed & I did nothing wrong. All of the credit cards I opened up are all in excellent standing.
Trust me I wouldn't want to do your job at all.
Insanity is hereditary. You get it from your kids.

I have to disagree with you here. I have never been late or missed a payment in ten years but this year a gas card and two credit cards went way up on my interest rates. When I got the cards they said they wouldn't do that unless I missed a payment or went over my limit. They lied because they went up on ours anyway. And when I called them they had the nerve to tell me I could always stop using them and pey them off and that it was because of the economy. My interest rate should be based on how I pay not on how someone else doesn't pay. The higher interest rate makes it really hard for me to make the minimum payments now where before I was paying more than the minimum. For the first time since I've had the cards I'm worried about getting behind on them now. I wasn't having a problem till they raised the rates.

yep, the rates went up on my in-laws cards also, they are very good people, never late, had been with the card company for years, and then up went the rates. They had no choice. They told them they could either close the account and continue to pay it off untill paid, or just accept the new higher rates.

And a reality check. Judge not lest ye be judged. I hope she never has to be the one the "collectors" are calling!

Oh hunny, I don't mind sharing my business...because I HAVE lived it and anyone who truly knows me on here knows what I am about to say is factual... I HAVE lived this... I still get collections calls...and emails. I'll make it very easy to understand... I am 34 years old, I went to college for a long time until the financial aid ran out, now I owe about $27k to the government for student loans...my ex husband was/is an ass and apparent junkie... so he single handedly ruined both his and my credit... I've had a few cars repo'd. I got divorced in April 2008 after being together since 2002... I found out things about Tim that no one wants discover, I had to change jobs numerous times due to my safety. In February I HAD a good job until I got laid off... I was on both Food Stamps and Unemployment until JUNE. So yes, hun I DO understand why people are upset, because I have lived it...most of my adult life.
I am also a severe type 2 diabetic and I owe the local hospitals enough money to open my own hospital. I've had wages garnished over that one.
I am just EXTREMELY blessed that I am now with a great guy who takes care of me and his/our obligations. Yeah, he can be an ass and I do see it through his eyes, as I do with Aaron's and Claudia's...and for the now FIFTH time I will say I accept it... things are going well now at work. I'm learning how to utilize the mute button when I start getting pissy.
I realize I am the one who cost myself bonus... no one else. But January is a new month to start over...and I will succeed...regardless of what people think.

So, just ask for a hardship program... most CreditCard companies have them.
I don't know about any other company, but our only qualification is telling us you're flat broke...you don't even have to prove it. We assume your word is bond and we sign you up. We have programs for 3, 6, 9 and 12 months and 5 years.
