My son and I are very sad right now...

We are sad because one of our mice died about an hour ago. We watched her death throes.. NOT something I EVER want to see again.. it was VERY disturbing. She had not been right for awhile, but we kept thinking she would pull out of it.

The other 3 mice we have are doing VERY well... they are healthy and BIG... they had been picking on her ever since we brouhht her home in August... biting her back end, not letting her eat, not letting her drink etc... but in the past few days they have been almost protecting her... weird....

she had a REALLY bad scab on her back end for a long time til i was able to break the others from biting her..(spritzed them with water)

My son thinks its HIS fault that she died because he was the last one to hold her, about 5 minutes before she passed.. I have told him that it is NOT his fault and that she is no longer suffering and will be happy where she is now. And he told me he is SO glad that I told him to put her back in the cage when I did...I cant even imagine how horrible he would have felt if she had died in his hands...

His father(my ex) called him and told him that his grandpa who passed in March must have needed a pet mouse to play with in heaven... I gotta give him props for knowing what to say to make his son feel better...

she was our favorite mouse and was the only one who would let us hold her and play with her... I made my bf take her out of the cage and 'dispose' of her... I couldnt do it...

So yeah, its not a happy day in my household today... thanks for reading and letting me vent and whine...

I am so sorry to hear that. I used to keep pet mice and they don't have a long lifespan- heartbreaking. Did you buy her from a pet shop or a place that sells feeder mice? If it was a place that sells feeder mice, those poor mice have an even shorter lifespan and are very prone to illness as their often inbreed terribly. It's always so hard to lose one though. At least you and your son know you gave her the best life you could.

How sad for her, that she was stuck in a cage while the others picked on her and had no way out.

well, that certainly would not be my choice for a pet, but, since it was yours, I know it is sad to lose a pet. I really dont think that any animal deserves to live its life in a cage.

We bought her from Petco... so I would say that it was a pet shop......

Mice wouldnt mind a cage that much as they live their "natural" lifes in enclosed spaces. Anyways, you can't have mice running around loose.

I am so sorry you lost your pet. We get attached to our fur babies, that's for sure.

I really don't think it would be a good idea to let a mouse or any other very small animal run free around a house. They can get hurt (stepped on, etc) very easily because they move so fast that one could esily get stepped on.

these mice generally have a life span of only a year or two at the most.

and if you want a companion mouse or rat for that matter ,*rats live longer_
you have to start playing and handling them in the first month after they are born, the parents are very protective of the babies and will bite. , lol , i worked for a breeder for two years , cleaning the little critters. if you buy a new one , get it really young and if your bringing it into a pen with other mice , you have to keep it in a shoe box seperate for a day or two , then take the old filler with their pee on it and put it in with the new one. rub it all over him or her. they will not think the new fellow is a threat if they smell their own smell on it. and wount attack it . if it smells different they ll think its a threat, thats why it was attacked,
as for its dieing , thats always hard to take , but i think mice angels are watching over it right now, so that it will be happy ,
good luck with any more of your babies.

So sorry to hear that. I always had mice when I was a teen, little Mighty Mouse and Fernando were my 2 favorites. I had a lab rat, Oscar, for 9 years before he passed away. Right now Fiona is on her head for a mouse, but we just have too many pets right now and I can't handle anything else. Big hugs to you and your son!
