Thread: UGH...my DS and brand names

I'm kind of a brand name snob, but I pretty much only buy on clearance and at 2nd hand stores or close out stores.

yea i hear ya, i have a 15 dd that is sooo into name brands she hardly wears anything without one. i'll tell ya what, i REFUSE to buy clothes just for the name. that is so superficial. it really pisses me off about her, lol! i dont want her to be like that i buy clothes because she LIKES them, not because of the name on them, but other relatives, prior people in my life, etc... will indulge her and she thinks i should too. the ONLY way i will fall into that is if they are having a sale i cannot resist, worth the money, i will. besides that, i dont do it.

Make him do some work for the shoes he wants.. within a certain price range. And after he does the work, let Joe buy them lol.
I loved Goody's before they went out of business. I would shop the clearance racks. My son bought 40 dollar jeans for 7-9 bucks each. He bought 7 pairs of jeans, 6 shirts and a pair of shoes for less than 200. But now they are closed. I will take the kids to Shoe Dept and they can get name brand for 50 bucks. Other than that.. they will wear walmart. I have 5 kids at home, cant afford 40 dollar jeans for 1 kid when i can get 2 pair for that price at walmart

Have you tried Nashville? I have always thought the Goodwill where you live is nasty.

I'm a huge clearance rack junky, so Chloe does get a lot of name brand stuff but it's cheap! I got her school shoes, reebok, for $18.99, which is the same price for shoes @ payless. Old navy has awesome clearance racks, I've gotten her stuff for $1 up to $6...I got her this one dress for .97 and she LOVED it, wanted to wear it daily LOL!

Thanks everyone. I live in the city and quite frankly most of our thrift stores are NASTY! I forgot about Platos Closet-my Mom has one near her house. This just makes me mad that he is thinking that the brand names will make him fit in. My once "go with the flow" kid, the one who LOVED going to Walmart and loved looking for bargains, has turned into a follower. He also has started to shut me out. UGH I am not ready for the teen years AT ALL!

I do remember being in grammar school and being picked on because I didnt have brand name gym shoes. But my Dad was totally frugal! It did start to bother me once the other kids started to pick on me.

Last night (after we all CHILLED LOL) Joe came up with an idea that he would have my DS help him clean the garage and do things around his shop for extra money. Then he could buy the things himself with his own, earned money. My DS did seem receptive to that. I personally do not believe in giving kids allowances. My DS is just expected to do things around the house!

My oldest was like that but the youngest, other that his skater-phase" wasn't too bad but they do eventually grow out of it. I used to make the boys "earn" they money for the designer things that wanted by doing chores around the house & their grandparents used to let them "earn" money too.

Eventually they do grow out of this phase or else they start working & having to pay for it themselves & you would be surprised at how that $80 sweatshirt isn't all that important any more.

Peer pressure is HORRIBLE. At our local public schools designer clothes & sneakers are forbidden. The kids have to wear "uniforms" of dark or khaki pants & solid color 3 button shirts. NO names can be visable so bye-bye American Eagle.

Greta (10 - 5th grade) has recently done the same thing. A girl at school told her she would have more friends if she wore Hollister. Well, guess what she put on her Christmas list...yep, Hollister, A&F, AEO, etc.... She does have some name brand things and wears those pretty often, but she isn't to the point where she won't wear anything else...yet. I agree with everyone else about the Goodwill stores, and also eBay. Though at times eBay bidding gets a bit crazy and you don't feel like your saving much $. I just got her some Aero skinny jeans from eBay for under $9 with shipping included. I think I just got lucky since they were sz 00 and the auction ended at 6 am. It really is a shame that kids feel that kind of pressure so early on.
