PS: There are white people in Africa.

So an African American could just be someone from Africa that has settled in America. Not a specific skin tone!

"The term 'colored' is not derogatory, [the NAACP] chose the word 'colored' because it was the most positive description commonly used at that time. It's outdated and antiquated but not offensive." [2]
It may be 'old school' but I don't see it as offensive.

If "the colored lady" rolled off her tongue like saying "the lady with the red hat", then no, not said offensively....if it was said with 'attitude' or 'disdain' then perhaps....

and very very very sorry if I offend anyone in this post.

As a person of the "COLORED Persuasion", I get offended when people call me black. The reason being, I do not look like the crayon, the sky at night or anything in that vacinity. My skin very light and my mother could have been a "passer". I am not African-American either. I am an American. I as born, here, I'm gonna die here and like several on the board here, I too am a mutt (heck even the POTUS calls himself one)

To call someone colored, what is so offensive about it? That's what is listed on my Birth Certificate and if you really think about it, we all have some color in us and the next time just come back on her and ask her which colored person she was talking.

I am colored, I just happen to be colored a sorta pasty/peachy color. My ass is about as white as a marshmallow, about the same consistancy too. Dammit.

My DD is 7 and when someone says 'black person' she always chimes up that they're not black they are brown. She also says that everyone is colored, just not the same color.

I call my close friends 'my nig gas', not all of them are black. They call me their nig ga and I'm White/Native. In my circle, the term nig ga just means homie.

See, that is what I mean. In every situation something else is entirely acceptable. Not everyone will be happy, no matter what you say.

Smart daughter you have to realize that everyone is colored.

I remember one time at a job, a little girl came to work with her mom and she asked me how I got my color. Me being the smart mouth that I am, told her I eat chocolate. Well she took me seriously and on the way home, asked her mom could they stop at the store and when her mom asked her why, she said she needed to get some chocolate so she could get dark like the lady at work.

reminds me of the time my best friend came over and brought her son, he was maybe 4. My dh's good friend was there too. He is black and Korean. My friend and I were talking about going to the tanning bed and how dark she was and how not dark I was. (she tans in 2 visits! grr...I gotta go a month!). Her son looked at DH's friend, pointed at him and said loud enough for the whole room to hear, "Mom, him's REALLY dark!". OMG......I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me. Luckily, the guy is super cool and busted out laughing. Then we all did!! We still laugh about that, 12 years later!

OP......sorry you were offended. You should have replied, "No problem honkie! I'll go get her!"
    Got a Scion? PM me!

well, maybe the reason i think it's offensive is because of the people in my experience or situations in life who use it happen to be racist. maybe things are different in different area's of the country. i just know i would not refer to someone who is black, african american, or whatever as colored. it just sounds wrong to me. i know when i'm doing my paperwork for work....when it comes to the race section it say B (black), W (white), H (hispanic), I (indiain), or A (asian). so the acceptable term here or at least for my company must be black.

my whole point is i would not want to offend or hurt someone's feelings.
There is always someone bigger and badder than you!
