Thread: Some people are so inconsiderate....

I'm half Filipino and half Japanese, and have experienced some discrimination and prejudice. I look more Filipino, and as a kid, played outside a lot and was often a dark tan. In 3rd grade, at the end of recess, a boy ran up to me and called me "N***ER" and kicked me in the ass. I was so shocked -- I didn't know what the word meant, but it was clearly not kind. I had to ask my parents what he meant.

And before that, we lived in North Carolina and had to move out of Army housing when my dad shipped out overseas. The nearby community was segregated (I think it was 1961), but since we weren't black and not really 'white', we ended up living in the poor white part of town. There was an older drunk guy down the road who hated our family because my mom was Japanese -- apparently still harbored ill will well after World War II was over. Thank goodness our neighbors close by didn't have the same issues.

It surprised me sometimes to still run into strong prejudices in this day and age.

I rarely use ethnic words to describe someone.
Being a slightly darker skin than me, means you are colored.
Due to the fact the person may be African-American, Jamaican, Black Foot, Dark Latin American, or a version of any ethnic mixing.

I can not be certain someone has African ancestry, and I am not going to ask.
People do not refer to me as that Viking Scottish Cherokee Canadian Jew French German American.


As for MLK day. I believe we celebrate the day because his message was of peace for the entire world. He was an amazing man that had a powerful mind and a great plan for the world.

Yes, I love filling out forms for race where they offer OTHER: please explain... and give you about 1 inch of space. I complain there is not enough room!

Other than medical forms (due to illnesses that are more predominant in some cultures)........ Why do we need that box anyway?

I am not sure what it up with the word colored anyway. Whenever I hear it, it brings to mind a person who has been "colored" with all the different crayons. LOL

i refer to black people as black. i refer to white people as white. i refer to asian people as to whatever county they came from if i know like korean or japanese etc.

saying colored to me sounds hillbillyish or something a slow person would say..not to mention offensive.

Why? Just because a person uses the word colored doesn't mean they're slow nor do they sound slow. Some were brought up on that term.

well because to me it's an antiquated term. something my grandma might have said. maybe slow wasn't the right word.....perhaps uneducated would be a better term. i think really old white people (and maybe even some really old black people refer to themselves as colored because it IS how they grew up...being divided away from white), racists people, and uneducated people use the word. it's very degrading.........something they used back in the days of slavery and segregation. if you were brought up on it, i hope you quit using it. it's offensive and makes a person sound racist....IMO.
