STupid freecycle I AM DONE
I am a moderator, and belong to another group that is down the block from me (another town). My work had over 40 old computers to give away, and the new boss wanted them gone ASAP. So, I posted them on my board and this other one. Well, I got an email saying that my post was not accepted b/c I put the company phone number. They claim that everything had to be done via email. Sorry, but it was easier to do it by phone. It is a company, knowingly giving out a number. This way, I don't have to waist my and the co's time checking email. I responded to the moderator and explained the situation (that it was easier for a phone number to be posted etc). She then told me that since I "crossposted" this info, she still wouldn't allow it to go up.
I am sorry, but nowhere in freecycle rules does it state that you cannot crosspost. NOWHERE. Free is free. Wouldn't she rather have them out of the stupid landfills and garbage? She is all about the control. She will reject a post b/c it has a misspelling in it. PLEASE! People make mistakes.

Wow that is bad.
Perhaps you could call your local library? They might take them off your hands so they can sell them during a book fair or something.
Maybe you could find someone to work with in doing something so kids who dont have computers might get one? I dont really know but yea, I too would be done with freecycle after that.

How about donating them to a local school?
Insanity is hereditary; you get it from your kids.

a lot of spammers do things over the phone, at our freecycle you get in trouble if you say you'll pick up an item & don't show up. They ask you to forward your emails to mods at our freecycle so people know that & give their phone # instead

that sucks that your mods are so strict... thankfully ours isn't.. you can post a number.. and you can crosspost.. Is there someone over her head you can go to?
I ain't from the south... but I got here as fast as I could!

We crosspost all the time, I belong to 4 groups that all surround the metro area where i live. Everybody does it and alot of people post phone #'s though if it's a home or cell they tell you to do it at your own risk. Some moderators are just plain jack a@@es. Some groups allow you to post pets some won't. I would rather post a pet on freecycle and have it actually have a chance of a good home rather than take it to the animal shelter and it get put down in 10 days for not being adopted right away.

WOW that is ridiculous, I am done with freecycle as well, it is just more trouble then it is worth

While I don't agree with some of her tactics, I do agree with most of her rules/guidelines. I think an acception can be made when it comes to the "phone number" rule in this case. I do not allow home/cell phone numbers as a safety precaution. I don't allow cross-posting on my groups, either, because it seems to be a constant complaint from other members (too much email!). What I ask is that each member pick a "home" group and post their offer/request on that group FIRST. If they get no response, they're welcome to post to another group after a minimum of 24 hours. There is really no reason to have to post to 4-8 groups at one time. All it does is flood other people's inboxes and waste people's time. Not to mention increase the amount of email the giver/asker gets in response to their post. Most of the rules/guidelines are there for a reason--and for a good one. Unless a moderator is breaking any rules (and there aren't many), then there really isn't anything you can do or anyone over their head that you can go to. Owners/Moderators set their own rules and include the guidelines/rules that Freecycle imposes as well.

The Following User Says Thank You to JKATHERINE For This Useful Post:

I just recently found out there was a freecycle group in my area. Ten days of getting the digest emails was all it took for me to unsubscribe. It was just the same people posting wants such as playstations, computers, TVs, XBox games, etc. Not worth my time even reading the site.
There was one woman that had a dishwasher to give away. I contacted her by email. She was less than two miles from me, but worked nights. I tried to get her to tell me a convenient time for me to pick up the dishwasher. She never contacted me again. The item is still listed, and I filed a complaint about her ignoring emails. Then I asked to be removed from the group.
If I have something to give away, or if I'm looking for something in particular I'll just pay for a classified ad.

LOL Just put it out at the road with a sign that says "5 Bucks" or something. Nobody will take it if its free but if you want money for it then it must work....

THe computers were gone in 20 min. The school would not have benifited from them because they were SO outdated, they would have to pay for memory, upgrades etc. Library as well. (Our library can afford new computers...) Anyhow....I ended up posting it on craigslist and on my freecycle boards. Members came through. I understand that the phone number is a security precaution...but THIS WAS AN EXCEPTION. You can make an exception. This moderator has a tuded that is like no other. I feel for her family members. She is really controlling. Sad.
