Staff report
Brian Palmer, the toddler mauled Monday by his family’s pit bull, died Tuesday morning at Medical University Hospital, Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said.
Palmer, who would have turned 2 in August, died at 2:38 a.m. from massive cuts to his airway, Nisbet said. An autopsy was being performed Tuesday.
No adults were home Monday morning when the dog, shut inside a laundry room of a Hunters Ridge Lane townhouse, apparently got loose, authorities said. The dog was in an upstairs bedroom when it went for the boy’s throat, Dorchestester County Sheriff’s Detective John Garrison said.
Nisbet said four children were in the townhouse at the time. The oldest was a 16-year-old, he said.
The 2-year-old dog was euthanized. The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said the dog had killed a family cat and attacked another dog within the last three weeks.
The sheriff’s office is investigating.
*this is from my local area. check out the bold area. i guess they were just trying to prove a point by keeping it. it backfired...and badly
the parents need to be charged. i'm so sick of hearing about this.* oh yeah, and before someone says something about no parents being home and how dumb could they be. that's not the point. this could have happened with them home.

This is way to sad. I think we hear these stories way to often.
I guess it could have been a poodle (not) that could have done this.
I don't even feel like getting into the whole pit bull thing again, but this just goes to show ya. I cannot believe a family with children would be raising the dog to be aggresive. It's just their nature.

Oh no .. here we go again with the whole dog thing
.. I am not going to debate why to and not to have a pit .. what I want to know is where were the adults?
Maybe if they were there, such a tragedy would have never happened! .. That poor child.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them. Distance and time may separate us but friendship and memories won't.

Is a 16yo not old enough to babysit? I babysat at 12yo. I do concede, my first response was 'where were the parents' until I saw a 16yo mentioned.

Like I said I am not debating this .. a 16 yr old is old enough to babysit .. a RESPONSIBLE 16 yr old .. why was the dog locked in a laundry room? .. I don't lock my dog in any room.
The most important thing in this whole tragedy is the innocent child who is no longer with us because the adults weren't being responsible parents.

You don't lock your dog in the laundry room because it is not a vicious dog. Who is to say this would not have happened if the parents were home? Why would (I assume it was the family dog) attack a member of the family. I promise I am not getting into this dog thing again.

Looks like we'll never know .. if you ask me it doesn't look like the parents raised this dog the right way .. any dog could have turned on a person when they are locked in a room and I am going to assume mistreated.

Small dog kills 6-week-old girl in California
October 9, 2000
Web posted at: 6:17 AM EDT (1017 GMT)
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A small Pomeranian dog killed a 6-week-old baby while the infant's caretaker briefly left the child unattended to warm a bottle of milk, authorities in Los Angeles said.
The relative, who was caring for the infant girl, found her head buried in the dog's mouth Saturday night, sheriff's Deputy Cruz Solis said. The girl died of head trauma at an area hospital, he said.
The baby's name was withheld because her parents were out of the country and had not been notified, Solis said.
The relative has not been charged. Animal control officers took the dog.
Pomeranians are a breed of miniature canines that have a foxlike face, pointy ears and long, fluffy hair. The deputy said Pomeranian attacks are rare.
"Obviously it doesn't take much to kill a 6-week old baby but it's not something that happens with that breed," Solis said.

Re: sigh!!
I heard once a dog has tasted blood---killed a cat or other animal--- they have to be euthanized. One case was a man raising wolfs---I know, just dumb---but they got a small dog and put it in with them---I know super dumb---and they killed the dog. After that the vet said to euthanize them since they would kill again and who knows what they would kill.
