Re: Why are they in school??
I wonder what the families of these children are thinking when they throw their kids into an American school knowing that they cannot speak or understand a bit of what is going on around them.
As a parent, I would never do something like that to my child. If I had to relocate to a different country for whatever reason, I would learn the language myself and teach as much of it as I could to my child before throwing him into that kind of situation.
At my son's school, they have this same problem. There are dozens of kids there who cannot speak or understand a single word of English. It makes things very difficult for the teachers and quite dangerous for the kids as well. How is a child who is hurt supposed to explain that he is hurting. How would they be able to understand and/or follow any directions? How much of a distraction is this to the other kids in the class? It is a terrible problem. I don't have a solution for it either, but I sure hope someone comes up with one soon.
The only thing I can think of that may help would be to separate the kids on a temporary basis. Just long enough to teach them enough English to be able to communicate with the teachers and people around them. It would not take long to accomplish this in my opinion. Whether or not this would be considered is anyones guess.

Re: Why are they in school??
If I am not mistaken by law their children have to be in school being they are living in America. I have a much different opinion on this situation then most people. The bottom line is they are here and it can't be changed so instead of hating them lets try to understand them. They want their children educated, just like we do. They want their children taken care of medically just like we do. Try to keep in mind regardless of their language or color, they are still human. The parents at home more than likely can't speak english illegal of not they still want their kids to be "normal" and go to school.
I take care of a little chinese boy 2-3 times a week and he doesn't speak english. He goes to a prek where he is learning english by listening to other children. Its hard sometimes to communicate with him but we always manage. It amazes me how much he has learned already. His parents both speak english but their accents are horrible so when they teach him to say certain words, though they try, they are incorrect. I am thankful that they choose to live in America where he is able to attend school and learn without being killed or shot in the street or starve to death. I am thankful for my little chinese buddy Albert whom has opened my eyes to many many things and he is only 4 years old and I love him as much as if he spoke fluent english and was born here. I wish everyone had a little Albert.

aawww hes ADORABLE!!!
While we all have our opinions about who should be here and who shouldn't (and I have voiced mine repeatedly lol) I do understand that by US law, all kids must go to school (although I am not sure what the law says about students with questionable immigration status) .... I am not saying that they shouldn't go to school, I am saying that since they are here, why not help them by teaching them english? I don't see how much of an education a child can get in an american school if they don't learn to speack english. No matter what their legal status is in this country, they aren't currently getting the full benefits of what our education system has to offer.
Like I said earlier, they are here, they are going to continue to be here, why not help them learn to be productive in our country.

Re: Why are they in school??
That's the reason I homeschool my DD, until the charter school near here has an opening for her. Both schools in our district have a high precentage of students who speak no english. I do want her to learn spanish, but I think she would feel left out if hardly anyone of her class mates spoke english in the halls, at lunch and recess, etc.

Re: Why are they in school??
I read the first line and the reason is every child no matter whether they can speak english or not is entitled to FAPE a free appropriate public education tat is why.

Re: Why are they in school??
Yes I read your post but as another poster said I read through the lines. It seems you are saying that they shouldnt be in school for the fact that they are illegal. All children have a right to education. No matter their legal status. And I believe they go to school to LEARN English as their parents at home obviouslly dont speak it. How and where else are they going to learn it? I had a neighbor that came from Mexico and she was around 14 and she learned the language in less than a year. She graduated from highschool and all but that is as far as she could go , because of her being illegal. I see threads here all the time where people complain about Mexicans not learning the language and I feel that they are TRYING this way. Children WILL learn if they go to school, however I feel that they should take their classes in English as a second language.
It was nice to read something positive, YankeeMary.

Re: Why are they in school??
If you don't understand english, how much are you going to learn in an average english class?? They need ESL classes to help teach them 1st. THEN put them in the regular class.

So everything I said about them NEEDING to be educated is a bunch of crap? I typed all of that out so someone can read between the lines and not read what I actually wrote? That makes so much sense If I want to say that they shouldn't be in school because they are illegal, I would have said that.... being illegal is not the point.
