I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
I quit smoking nine days ago, I have not had as much as a puff since Nov 9th at 6pm. I quit because I can't afford it, but I still haven't even been able to afford to treat myself to lunch at Taco Bell. I quit to improve my health, and I have been so congested that I haven't been able to breathe through my nose for a week. I'm using nicotine replacement gum and will be out in another day or two, and of course, I can't afford more. (I got the first box free). I need the replacement program because there are other smokers in my home and I have smoked for thirty years, cold turkey would never work. I don't want to smoke anymore, however, I DID desperately feel the need to whine about it, and this seemed like the place! Thanks for listening.

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
I too quit after smoking for 20 years, this is what I did to stop:
I baught a cheap bag of straws, a bag of dum dum lollipops and a bag of rubber bands.
I'd wear a rubber band around each wrist. Any time I had the urge to smoke I'd pull back the rubber band and snap my wrist. IT hurt and the thought was transfered from wanting that cigg to the pain in my wrist,
To take care of the hand to mouth issue, I'd either suck on the lolipop or chew on a straw.
I've introduced this method to four of my other friends and so far three of them are now smoke free. The patches and gum are nice alternatives, I tried them aswell, but all they did was reitroduce nicoteen back into my system, and that was not helping me at all, it takes 48 hours for your physical addiction to nicoteen to pass, the rest is just mental, the hardest part is the hand to mouth habit, just replace that cigg with another object.
Hope this helps,

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
You should be very proud of yourself. I have been smoking for 30 years. I would love to quit, but I am so afraid to try. There are 3 other smokers in my house. You can do this, it has been 9 days, keep up the good work. Please keep us posted, you just might encourage others to stop also.

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
Think how mad you would be at yourself if you smoked just one, then all those days you tried dont seem as big of a deal. If you have medical insurance have your doctor give you zyban or wellbutrin something that will help stress etc. I quit last Jan 3rd. I took the money I would have been spending on cigs and sat it aside to by myself something I did that for 7 months or so. I also take wellbutrin and that helps me I dont even think of smoking on a daily basis. Once in awhile it does cross my mind though. Good luck and keep going girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
I quit 23 months ago, cold turkey, what helped me was seeing my beloved mother laying in a hospital bed having a machine breathing for her, and then 2 days later losing her .Never again will I smoke a cigarette.I'm now so over wanting one.
If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
Thank you all for all of your encouragement! (and an extra special thanks to the two that PM'd me, you know who you are). I'm just taking this one day at a time at this point. I have no insurance, so I just have to come up with what I can as far as help. Every time I feel a strong craving I remind myself what the first few days were like and that I will NEVER go throught that again. I spent years making excuses for not quitting; too much stress, not enough money, can't quit with a smoker in the house, etc. No more excuses, they will always be there if I want to use them. The problem with patches and gum is that even though they cost about the same as a carton of cigs, I can't buy them "by the pack" when money is short. Too bad the companies that market them don't realize that...Check out my "Quit Meter"...

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
CONGRATS! Big Time! I was a 3pk a day smoker for yrs & quit 2 yrs ago. UNtil recently I would crave them everyday., but lately I hardly think about them!
Its all about will-power, try to keep busy & EXERCISE! You'll need to! I gained about 30 lbs, that I'm trying hard to get rid of it!, but the weight gain is so worth it!

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
I've tried so many times to quit and always went back. I've quit yet again back in February and so far, so good. It's hard but you can do it. Don't be discouraged if you gain some weight. Everyone who quits gains some here and there. Just think that when you go up stairs, you won't be out of breath. Your clothes and hair won't smell like stale cigarettes. I still have fleeting cravings here and there but I put them out of my mind. I really think I'm going to make it this time and you will too!

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
I smoked for 32 years and quit 18 months ago. I NEVER thought I would want to or be able to but I did by "reading a book" Its called Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Alan Carr and I swear if anyone reads the book you WILL quit! It does not tell us all the things we already know like cost, smell, health etc. instead he tells you to light up while you are reading. I think he brainwashes you. All I know is everyone I have had read it has quit.
Good luck!!n Anyway you do it, its the right thing.

Re: I quit smoking, now I wanna whine...
I joined SparkPeople.com today (see gobs post on freebie board) and lo and behold, they have a weight loss group for people who just quit smoking! Best of both worlds. Between this forum and that one, I am definitely feelin' the love! Thanks all.
