Grrrr....Work related vent
Okay, I know that in the "Grand Scheme of Things" this is relatively minor, but it really irritates me, none the less!
I work a full time job M-F days and a part time job M-F evenings and 10 1/4 hours on Saturday. My vent is with the part time job. Usually I enjoy it. I work with LOTs of people on my day job (which I also LOVE), but the part time job, I am kind of "on my own". I answer phones for a car dealership (along with other duties) but, due to being the evening/Saturday person, there is no one else in the building that I am in. The down side is that there are no true "breaks". I am the ONLY one answering the phones. Usually I squeeze "pottie breaks" into small down times and rush in, do my business, wash my hands and back to work. I know that this is probably a HUGE wage & labor violation (mainly on Saturdays), but for the most part I really don't mind. HOWEVER, there is one bathroom in this building and it is out of order today. I am not able to go to the other building due to the phone thing. I am at 8.5 hours without a "pottie break" ---- I think my eyeballs are turning yellow, I have to pee SOOOOOOOO bad!!!!
I am really pissed off (no pun intended) that I am so worthless to them that they think I can go 10 1/4 hours without peeing!
ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!
Thanks for listening to me vent!

Sorry to say that phone would ring off the hook before I would sit there in misery. Certainly there is an answering/voice mail that you could check once you return from your restroom break. People (employeers) will only treat you the way you allow them to. Now go to the restroom, it is bad for your bladder and kidneys to not go.

Re: Grrrr....Work related vent
You know, I really should. I have already composed an e-mail saying that I WILL NOT work another Saturday without access to a bathroom. The company has voice mail for individuals extentions, but no answering machine/voicemail set up for general incoming calls. Once we all leave for the day, a customer calling would continue to hear the phone ringing and ringing...otherwise that would be the perfect solution. I just hate to
"abandon my duties" for the ten or so minutes it would take to trek back and forth from the nearest bathroom, but I am about to the point where I am going to say "F the business lost by the phones not being answered" and take my sweet time trekking to and from the bathroom in the other building across the lot.

Even in prison the inmates get to go to the restroom when they want to. Expect no less from your employer.

Re: Grrrr....Work related vent
I wouldn't have gotten to the yellow eyes point I'd have been finding me a bathroom lol. It is VERY bad for your kidneys and bladder to hold it in that long. If the phone doesn't get answered tough noogies. Is there noone-read, salesman-that can answer the phones?

You all will be happy to know (and my kidneys also thanked me) that I took Yankee Mary's advice and took the stroll to the other building and took a break. The phones just rang and rang and, like killbarney said, tough noogies!
Unfortunately, this place doesn't know what "teamwork" is and your job is your own, no one will pitch in to help you. That is just how they operate, which I think is LUDACRIS!!!! of course you should help each other out, but what do I know, I am just a little peon!
ETA: The bathroom is fixed today!

Re: Grrrr....Work related vent
Glad you took the break, as you well deserve! You should make them pay you extra for no breaks! Not that I want you to be without a job, but is there not any answering services in your town or nearby? Where I work, at 5pm we switch the phones over. A call center in Lexington answers our lines and takes messages for us. If it's important, it gets sent to the "on call" person. Then the next morning, we switch the phones back over at 8am and the call center faxes us a report of every call that came in. It's only like $60-$100 a month. The company would save a lot of money not having to hire someone just to answer the phones.

Unfortunately, federal law does not regulate break periods. http://www.dol.gov/elaws/esa/flsa/screen6.asp
However, your state laws might (and probably do). Since I don't know what state you're in, I can't look it up. Check with the HR dept at your full time job. They would know. Or go to the website above, there is a link in one of the paragraphs to the list of states.

Here's a little trick that I've had to use in a situation much like yours. Just put all the phone lines on hold and go do what you need to do. That way, if anyone does try to call, they'll just get a busy signal and it will appear that you're really busy. Trust me, this works just fine and dandy.
