Man found shot to death near Zachary

Dressed in boxer shorts and a T-shirt, the bullet-riddled body of 20-year-old Edward Herbert Simmons was found early Tuesday near a blood-stained wooden fence on Mount Pleasant Road, just outside Zachary.

Simmons had multiple gunshot wounds from either a .40-caliber or .45-caliber handgun, said Deputy Fred Raiford, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Zachary Police Chief Joey Watson said something was tied around Simmons’ neck. However, Raiford would not confirm that.

Determination of the cause of Simmons’ death is pending an autopsy with the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office, Raiford said.

He also said detectives don’t know whether Simmons was killed on Mount Pleasant Road or killed elsewhere and his body dumped on the road.

No suspects or motives were identified as of late Tuesday into what the Sheriff’s Office is considering a homicide, Raiford said.

Raiford did not release any other information about Simmons, other than he lived at 217 Hillcrest Drive.

A 17-year-old woman, who lives in a trailer park near where Simmons’ body was found, said she heard gunshots between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The woman, who declined to identify herself, said she was sitting on her porch and talking on the phone when she heard six or seven gunshots. She said she didn’t see or hear anyone.

“It’s like someone came out of their back door, shot their gun and went back in,” she said. “It was really quiet.”

After the first gunshot, the woman said, she thought someone was going after an animal. After the other gunshots, she thought “something bad had happened.”

Instead of contacting the police, though, she said she tried to sleep.

“I was scared,” she said. “I didn’t call because I wasn’t sure about what happened.”

A motorist saw Simmons’ body and called police about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, Watson said.

Zachary police secured the scene, called emergency medical services and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, Watson said.
