Re: ugg, son's tooth broken in school!

So sorry about your son, that totally stinks!! I just had my two front teeth broken off while I was at work.( I was reaching for something on the top shelf and a punch bowl fell and hit me in my mouth!!) I went to my dentist and I had enough of a tooth left so he told me they could put on the veneers. I really do like the veneers, I have had them before I think they look sooooo real and they do last a long time. The previous veneers I had were going on 8 years, and they still looked great until my untimely accident. The cost is very real too. I receive a letter from workman's comp stating that they did pay for the veneers and it came to around $1700.00 for two teeth!!

    Good luck w/everything!!

wow katkat777! That is great that it was covered. My son made out great today, they only built up a little bit of tooth so that if it breaks off (which is probable) they won't have to re-do it all. Sort of like slow steps. The lady at the dentist who handles the insurance said it can be submitted to medical and dental because of several factors. So that will be good.
So we go back again in a month!

I think this is so unfortunate. Your son will have to deal with this for the rest of his life. I certainly wish him the best!

poor little guy hope he is feeling much better now

btw wasnt trying to say it was the schools fault but I know where my kids go to school they have insurance just for such accidents that our tax dollars help pay for. Several kids have gotten hurt accidently this year and the school's insurance covers it all thankfully

Flybaby-could the extra charge be for the retainer? Check and see if it was included in your original fees. That sounds about right for a retainer.

Matts mom-Tooth troubles are the worst. I wish your little guy a good tooth day.

Public Schools are exempt from accidents. If your child gets hurt or injued at school, the school is not responsible for any damages that incur. That is the simple law.
So the balance will not be payable by the school. You will have to pay the dentistry bills yourself. The school may have offered that insurance to students at the beginning of the year for accidents that occur on school grounds, but it is the parent's responsiblity to pay for it.

No, it's just their bizzare book keeping! We've had this problem from the beginnning and every month DH goes in with the bill and has them go over it and they say, oh, yes, you are up to date, you don't owe anything. Then, 2 weeks later, we get another bill. Go figure!

    Matt's Mom,

So glad to hear your son did well! In my situation, it was a slow process but everything turned out great. I does stink he will have to deal w/this for the rest of his life. The only bright side is if he does get veneers, they look fabulous! They match the color to his teeth no discoloration and they are very durable. Had a ton of compliments on mine I haven't had any problems with them. Good luck with all of this and keep us posted!!

Re: ugg, son's tooth broken in school!

Thanks so much katkat77! Yes, it will be a very slow process. Right now they are more concerned with protecting the root. He goes back in a month to do a little more of the build up. And I found out that our insurance company does not have the clause where it can be submitted to both medical and dental. I spoke to the school business manager and he said they did have insurance for those matters, but no longer do. The lady at the dentist who handles insurance matters said it's very unfortunate that there is no other funding as this is a very expensive injury. Just what I wanted to hear lol.
PrincessArky~yes, that was the case here as well up until recently I guess. Apparently some places DO have the insurance. It must be different all over but I imagine for the most part it's a big fat no. You would think our school taxes would not be so outrageous then, lol!! Oh well. It's only money And my son is definitely worth it

Re: ugg, son's tooth broken in school!

Hey there Matt's Mom, I just thought I would offer some knowledge from experience. When I was 7 another boy stood on the end of a teeter totter I was on and then jumped off. Being that I was little I flew in the air and smacked my face down on the school equipment and my front tooth was 1/2 to 3/4 gone.

I had a year long root canal and then a crown. I am 35 and the crown has been replaced 3 times at about $1000-$1300 a time. It has never been covered under my medical or dental insurance (believe me, I tried) because it is considered "cosmetic", even though it was from injury/trauma to the mouth. I have researched veneers too, but I don't think with 3/4 of the tooth gone they would have enough surface to work with (I could be wrong).

I feel so bad for your son as I know exactly what you are going through. I would definitely push to see if there is any way the school would assist you in paying for this. I know it's totally up to your dentist as to whether or not to leave the roots exposed, but again speaking from experience. The tooth is most likely going to turn dark brown or gray from the damage. I would definitely get the crown or veneer for him as soon as they allow it (for confidence issues if nothing else-kids can be so mean, you all know what I am talking about).

I am not trying to scare you or anything like that so hopefully no one bites my head off. I just lived through EXACTLY the same thing as a child and I feel for you and your son. Take care, I hope everything works out for you guys.

Re: ugg, son's tooth broken in school!

klrklr50~ Thanks for the insight! I just read your post (not sure how long ago you posted this) It's been some time since this happened and yes, his tooth has turned darker. I just feel so badly as his teeth were coming so straight and beautiful. He had a material put on there just for now and it broke off, they fixed it but not to look like an entire tooth again, they were afraid he'd break it off too easily. They are going to do an x-ray in August to see if he is ready for the root canal. They just keep telling me every time "this will be a problem his whole life" Since then there was 2 more incidences at school where he was hurt! Then he had things stolen out of his backpack right in his locker (IN THE CLASSROOM!) Mind you....this is 2nd grade!
I will be glad when school gets out (well, at least for a while, lol!)
