Re: Rude Ppl and Stupid Dress Codes
I have to agree that security was out of line. Since when is Security the fashion police but then again upper management might have told them not to let ppl in dressed a certain way.
I have held phone jobs that were business casual. Spent the whole day on the phones seeing noone. The reason they want ppl to look professional is because if you look the part, you will act the part. Especially since you don't actually see the customers your dealing with, you are more likely to slack off.
Also, if the clients come in, they want to see a profession bunch of employees, not a bunch of ppl in sweats and t-shirts.
It all depends on what a company if looking for, but usually the first impressions is what counts.

Re: Rude Ppl and Stupid Dress Codes
Check into consignment shops for career clothing.
Several of my friends have office jobs and have to dress up for work. they take their clothes that they don't want anymore (but still look brand new) and put them in these second hand consignment shops. They also shop at them. You can get extremely nice career clothing that way for a fraction of the cost.
I do agree with you though. You shouldn't have to wear 3 inch heels, and 3 piece suits to work as a $6.00 hr phone tech.

Re: Rude Ppl and Stupid Dress Codes
There is always freecycle if you have one in your area or curbcycle I believe. You could keep your eye on it or request dress clothing in your size, I'm sure there has got to be someone out there that would be able to help.

Re: Rude Ppl and Stupid Dress Codes
I'm from Tx. as well...Houston. I would never dream of showing up with tennis shoes on. That's to casual considering you're going in for an application and you would like to get an interview...sorry (jmo).
Even Aggie (dh) is a LAN Admin. working on cumputers all day, on his knees, lifting, moving computers. He never wears items like that to work. He knows better. He never sees many people either....still has to work with others.
It's no different to me than brushing your teeth, hair, makeup. You're there to put your best food forward.
However, I do understand your point of sitting behind a desk, not seeing anyone in person. Still you're wanting to make a good impression to a possible employer. You take pride in yourself and how you come across. It has nothing to do with what you know about computers.
I would report the others for how you were treated. JMO-because you weren't dressed the way they wanted there's no reason for it to be talked about with others.....ONLY YOU.
I also think they should give you another oppertunity to come in and fill out an application.....since now you know the dress code.
Good luck to you.

That's right! Most places like that have dress codes and if you don't wear what they want you to wear then you won't be working for them.

Re: Rude Ppl and Stupid Dress Codes
Sorry I have to agree with most of the rest. Shorts and tennis shoes? NO WAY for ANY job interview. My husband is a mechanic does that mean he applies in greast coveralls? NO he wear dockers and a nice polo shirt etc. A simple sleeveless dress, or top with simple skirt is SO EASY and so comfy too in the heat and would have done the trick with sandles like was mentioned. I wish you luck in your job search and I bet this taught you something about interviews.

Re: Rude Ppl and Stupid Dress Codes
First off, the security guard should NOT have treated you like that. On another note they may have saved the job for you by rescheduling the appointment. Maybe the interviewers wouldn't have cared, but if they did you could have lost the job no? Try to look at it in a positive light, its irritating you wasted the morning, but maybe this ordeal will help you clinch it. I have never worn sneakers or shorts to a job interview, its just not accepted around here anyways, but different parts of the country seem to have different levels of whats casual and not. To me, casual at work is black or khaki pants, with dress shoes/heels, nothing open toed or sneakers and a nice button up blouse or dress top. Even working as a Computer Technician I have to wear black pant and nice polos and blouses because I'm dealing with customers. Hope the job goes well for you!!
