I don't think it's fair either but I don't know a thing you can do about it. I wish there was. Our son has been out of high school since 1988. Still, we got to pay.

Re: Homeowners Insurance
Oh Wow, that's alot! I have a three bd,one & half bath, full finished basement,in the country,my own woods and have one of the best schools in the district and pay less then $300.00 a year, paid in with my mortgage.
The insurance covers my house, household inventory, accidents, weather, structure, fire etc...I would not, not have it. CYA all the way.

Re: Homeowners Insurance
Thank you everyone for responding
By the sounds of things the insurance companys are screwing us all
I have heard that if you do make a claim they either drop ya the following year and get you on a "risk list" so that when you get insurance even off another Company it costs through the nose. Or should I say through the ***!
Where will it end thats what I'd like to know! It's ridiculous!!!

I pay Social Security tax, yet I have never collected a dime of Social Security. I pay for Medicare too, but have never used it or been entitled to it. I pay taxes for roads I will never drive on. It's called democracy.

you pay social security and medicare for when you are elderly. you will have access to those things when you get older. you have never been in a car that is driving on a road? you really can't compare those things to something like paying taxes for schools.
I don't support stupidity!

Sure I can. And who is to say that SS and Medicare will be solvent when I am old enough or even that I will live that long?

that's a misconseption that most people have. the insurance usually(a few do but the majority do not) cover the contents of your home if it say goes up in flames. when my b/f's house went up back in 2000 the only reason everything was covered was due to the fact that there were 2 policies on the house( they didnt realize there was 2 but after the blaze they were glad since the one that they thought was the only one that they had would only cover re-building).

Re: Homeowners Insurance
Ours runs $500 per year and we carry full replacement value on the contents, which is slightly more costly. We have made 2 homeowner claims in the past 5 years due to lightning zapping PC's, DVR boxes and other electronics and our rates have not raised due to those claims. I do know that our suburb does have one of the higher tax rates in Ohio and the schools get a big chunk of that.
Did inquire to our Allstate agent why rates have gone so high,he said alot of it is due to the rising cost of building supplies and labor cost.
Think someone mentioned they want to buy a fixer upper with cash, but not insure it....personally I don't think thats a good idea just for the reason rather you pay cash or carry a morgage you still have an investment of time and money, not to mention your personal contents.....without insurance that all could be gone in an instance if the worse happens.
As far as not being fair about paying school taxes and etc, came to the conclusion long ago that if I pick and chose where our money goes there would be things our taxes go to that I have no use for example, programs funded with tax dollars such as Alcohol and Drug reabilitation. Granted many people out there that the money helps, but personally its a service I do no need. The money has to come from somewhere, so as tax payers we all share the tax burden rather we use or require the program being funded from our taxes.

Re: Homeowners Insurance
We pay $568 a year for insurance. It covers replacement, too. Some of the things the companies take into count is how far your house is from a fire hydrant, if you have a door opener for your garage, out buildings.
Just don't drop your insurance. I have a friend that lost his house to fire last summer. Trust me, that check was all he walked away with. Better safe than sorry.
