Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
well my middle child has a heart murmur,, born with PULMONARY STENOSIS. he had a valve that was too small and had to have surgery to enlarge it when he was 9 weeks old. and has regular visits to the cardiologist to keep close tabs on it, since the valve will no longer close on its own, and have to make sure blood doesn't start flowing backwards in the the chamber and start enlarging the heart. have to make sure he has antibiotics before any kind of dental work and with stitches he has to have extra, just little things like that, he's 9 now and SO FAR SO GOOD, he's able to play football, basketball, baseball, just have to keep checking

Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
My babies were born 6 weeks early. The Peditrician (sp) heard something and refered us to a CArdo. They did testing they were only about 2 months old at the time. The Dr. told us it was nothing to worry about. THey have what is called a Stills Murmor. (it has a longer name, but for us to remember it, he gave us this name). He told us that by the time they reach puberty it should go away. And that if for some reason we do take him to the hospital / dr and they mention to us about the heart murmor we are to tell them that it is Still Murmor etc. So he told us not to worry about it, we told our Peditrician and she seemed ok w/ the answer. They are now 9 months old and seem ok. Hope that helps

Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
I was told that my youngest son had a heart murmur when he was a baby (not an infant). There was never a big deal made out of this, and doctor said that many outgrow it. He is now 6 yrs old, and at last check-up, it was not detected. But everytime he goes in, I will ask about it.

Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
My 10 yr old was diagnosed with a heart murmur at 2 years old. The ped said he had it before but most outgrow it by age 2. We were sent to the cardiologist and they did a full work up. They said it was an "innocent" murmur, which only means there is no reason for the murmur detected. Nick had to go back once a year for check ups. We did this for 4 or 5 years and then changed insurance companies. The cardiologist we were seeing wasnt on our insurance so we stopped going since it was "innocent". Finally, he wanted to play baseball so I asked his ped for a referral to a cardiologist that was on our insurance. He sent us to Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital. They did an echocardiogram(ultrasound of the heart and the arteries in the neck) and sent us home. Three days later the ped called me and said he was fine to play baseball, but he had been diagnosed with PFO(Patent Forum Ovale). Apparently, he has a small hole in his heart that is getting larger as he grows so it wasnt seen earlier. The ped said he MIGHT have to have surgery later, but then again, he may not. We have to remember to ask for antibiotics before any dental appointments but that is the only restriction he has.
I wouldnt worry too much. Between the time your son was 5 and your daughter turned five, there may have been new recommendations for heart murmurs.

Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
I was born with heart murmmer and I have grown up to be an adult. Just remind your doctor when they see your children. Chances are they will outgrow it like the rest of us.
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.

Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
I know it doesnt compare to a child but since my son is grown my baby is my pomeranian who is 5 months old-they have me pretty scared about his heart murmer-they are saying it is pretty bad. I just lost a puppy (6 months old) 2weeks before I got this one. All as I CAN say is that you must be very scared and I can understand-its hard when you dont get a straight answer from the doctors.

Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
I was born with a heart murmor, 31 yrs later I still have it. I have this card I have had since I was very young, it's in my wallet all tattered up, I couldn't read it for the life of me if I wanted. I know it's has something to do with showing the dentist when I go in for dental work. I guess now that I'm a big girl I can remember to tell him on my own.
As someone else mentioned, when you have your children at the doctors just remind him/her about the murmors if they don't mention it to be sure the muror was still detected, that way any changes can be noted.

My 81/2 month old son is a 2 vessel cord baby born at 38 weeks at 6 pounds. He has a Still's murmur, which a PP referenced and Pulmonary Stenosis, also referenced by a PP. He sees a cardiologist every 6-8 weeks. He began these visits at 2 days old. He's doing great.

Re: Anyone have a child with a Heart Murmor?
Just wondering why the antibiotics are needed when seeing a dentist? I was just recently diagnosed with a heart murmur with my last pregnancy. Scared the crap out of me when they sent me to the cardiologist for tests. Turned out that it was just precautionary. The pregnancy was bringing out symptoms of the murmur - palpitations mainly. I had to wear a monitor, keep a palpitation diary and they ran a few EKG's and a ultrasound of my heart. The whole cardiologist visit was a bit scary - but all turned out to be just fine. Hope you get good news.
