DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- A 12-year-old girl upset about being grounded by her mother fatally shot the woman in the face while she slept, Texas police said.

Elvira Marion Walton, 48, was discovered in her bed early Sunday by her son. The 10-year-old boy called police around 1 a.m. "Apparently the motive is because the daughter was upset that the mother disciplined her," police Sgt. Gary Kirkpatrick said in Monday editions of The Dallas Morning News.

The girl has been charged with murder. Police found a gun in the house, but investigators did not immediately say whether it was the weapon used in the shooting or who owned it.

An older daughter, Thanica Derrick, said her mother had been having trouble with the girl. Walton had six children and lived in a converted garage used as the family home. "She is your average 12-year-old, hormones and everything," said Derrick, 22. "There's nothing that bad to make her do that to my mama. She had been breaking out of the house and not going to school."

OMG How horrible!

I guess my question is...why did this girl think this action would help? Are we not having children with common sense? It is not a taught commodity, you either have it or ya dont, so what is causing so many kids(people) to not have common sense?

Ok, this is going to get me flamed... but, this girl lived in a neighborhood where family disputes are often solved w/ violence... and it's not right, but I think all parents know that kids generally follow what they see around them.

It's very sad, this has been the 'big news' here in DFW since Saturday night or Sunday morning... my jaw hit the ground when I heard it... I can't believe anyone would leave a gun where a 12 year old could find it... not that it's the mothers own fault, I simply mean that as a generalized statement... that in this day and age, I can't believe any person in the world would leave a gun where a kid could get to it... or that kids still think this is ok.

There are a lot of young people that live in violent neighborhoods and don't resort to using violence when they are upset at being disciplined by their mothers. As well as there are many people that own guns and their 12 year olds know where they are kept but still do not go and get the gun and shoot anyone when they are upset.

There is something more wrong with this child than meets the eye. Many 12 year olds are hard to handle and do not kill their own mother in their sleep. After reading this my mind raced backMary Bell. I was pretty young when this case hit the newspapers and I just couldn't believe that anyone so close to my own age would have something inside them to kill.

I hope that there will be help for the surviving family as they recover from this senseless act.

What neighborhood is that? The article doesn't say. I heard (briefly) about an East Dallas murder - is this the one?

This is soooo sad.

On the news, it mentioned that the girl invited her friends over to watch her mom as she was dying. Sounds like a pre-planned thing to me.
