Dr's think I am diabetic
well everyone I have NOT having a good day, went to the health dept to have my annual 6 month pap and they did a urine dip, the test strip wwas dark brown which meant my glucose was 4 point plus (( I dont really understand that myself so please excuse my ignorance I felt like I had been hit by a runaway train)) So what was a usual hassle turned out to be something serious, they sent me over to my Dr to get a blood sugar level to see if they were going to have to hospitalize me. My BS was 271
It was supposed to be in between 60-100 major diabetes here. So I took a blood test and they gave me a blood sugar testing kit to check it twice a day and moniter it closely for two weeks, because I do not have any source of income or medical insurance they want to see if they can control it with diet and excercise, two weeks from now I go and get some blood tests run, major $$$$ I have heard to confirm their suspicions ((Dr told me outright I have diabetes)) I am so bummed out, I have diabetes in my family history on BOTH sides, I have seen my uncle lose toes/eyes etc. I went on the diabetic diet as soon as I got home, no sugar sweetness, no blessed choclate. OUT of all the things choclate is what I will miss most.
Anyways please keep your fingers crossed with me that this is the type that can be controlled with diet and excercise and that things will work out even better and maybe they will be wrong, maybe even say a prayer or two for me? For all of you who dont know me my name is Jennifer

Re: Dr's think I am diabetic
You can control it with diet and exercise. Go to the American Diabetes Association web site and you will find some guidelines there. Your pharmacy might have some literature as well.
The medication is not that expensive because most of it is generic meds but the strips and the lancets are. Your doctor might be able to get these for you free. Generally speaking you can go to the One Touch site and they will give you a monitor and sometimes they give the lancets out in bulk. The strips are about $100 a month depending on how often you have to check your blood sugar.
It isn't a death sentence but you can control it. The diet is high protein/low carb and it's actually a very healthy way to eat. It won't kill you but you can cut out most of your sweets. I find that with the meds, the sugar makes me sick.
Keep a positive attitude. It's going to be hard, but it isn't impossible.
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.

Re: Dr's think I am diabetic
Think positive, Jennifer! Activity and proper diet help a lot of people.
Others may have to add a pill every day.
Keep us posted. Prayers up to Jesus for you. Hugs!

Re: Dr's think I am diabetic
Is there any chance that you could have PCOS? That will make your blood sugar reading high and your body acts like a diabetics would. I went through some tests and when I went for the blood work I had to fast. Usually when they are testing for sugar they don't want you to eat or drink anything after midnight because the results wouldn't be accurate.
