drug addiction
Most of you will probably scoff at what I am about to post, but tis true.
Alcholics have places they can go to receive help. Drug addicts have a place. Well, most drug addicts. There is one drug I have yet to hear of people going into clinics for and it is about the most widely used LEGAL drug there is...CAFFINE. Namely in the form of a MOUNTAIN DEW.
My husband is terribly addicted and he wants help. How the heck are we suppose to get him help?

Re: drug addiction
First off the headaches coming off this drug will be torture for him........i know when i tried to kick PEPSI
I went 13 days and had a terrible headache and the minute i drank a pepsi it was gone.
No joke. I drink 1 12pk a week and that is down so much since 2 yrs ago....and it cant be that diet stuff either
But now that ya got my thinking...what about "nicotine" meetings also?
Tell hubby good luck!
I finally found the one man not like all the rest!

Re: drug addiction
He has gone through the headaches over and over. You see, he starts on Sundays cutting them out, and Wham: Wednesdays or Thursday he has chugged at least one. The bad thing is, his kidneys are killing him when he does this.

Re: drug addiction
What does the doctor say? Can he cut down slowly instead of going 'cold turkey'. (The caffeine in these drinks are a killer.)
I LOVE Diet Coke...but usually drink the decaffeinated stuff!
Never argue with an idiot. It will bring you down to his level and he’ll win because of experience.

No scoffing here!
I had the SAME experience with Coca-Cola!! The headaches were monster! So, I'd buy a bottle of regular and a bottle of caffeine free and mix each glass half and half to wein myself off. Eventually all was fine, but no cold turkey with caffeine--it's a killer!

Re: drug addiction
I also have kidneys that won't tolerate coke's. My dr. finally told me, if I didn't cut out all the soda's, I would loose function of my kidneys. I have drank nothing but water for about 3 years now. If I have the least bit of caffiene , it instantly gives me a headache. I am sure he doesn't want to end up with Urinary tract infections, or worse, a kidney infection. Not fun!!!

I imagine his kidneys do hurt pretty bad... but when he starts developing kidney stones they're gonna hurt even worse! Sorry, not trying to be rude, but I've been through the kidney stones so I know what caffeine can do... tapering off is a good way to do it, but if that's not possible I don't really know... my husband quit the MD cold turkey a couple years (he was drinking a 2 litter a day) ago but still drinks coffee like it's going out of style so I'm not sure how to get him off the caffeine.
If his kidneys won't stop him, maybe this will help... even in healthy adults w/ good teeth, the sugars sit on the gum line all day long and will eventually cause severe rotting... which is why my husband had to quit. I'd rather deal w/ headaches for 2 weeks, or switch to some sort of alternately sweetened tea or coffee than deal w/ tooth pain.

Re: drug addiction
I drink way to much pop myself. I know all about the headaches too. I started the South Beach diet and had to stop drinking them, I last just a few days and went right back to drinking them again. I couldn't help it, the headaches were killing me and I'm home 24/7 with 3 kids and there was no way I could handle the headaches and kids without some type of pain meds. I also get migraines real bad anyway and I just can't deal with it. I wish I had some help to offer but I don't. Maybe a doctor could help?

Re: drug addiction
I used to drink loads of soda also, I was addicted to Dr. pepper or vanilla coke. I drank about 1 or 2 a day. However, I one day decided enough was enough and I quit all together. I did get headaches for about 3 days and I was cranky. But, I replaced soda with Clearly American (Wal-mart has a brand also called Quencher?), it is like Clearly Canadian but better. I get the fizz I need and the taste is pretty good. Not like a diety taste. That was my answer and no calories or carbs or anything in it, it is considerd just as good as plain water (talked to a nutritionist). Plus, I don't want to have another one right after like with soda. It quenches my thirst for soda. I have not had a regular soda for about 4 months now.

Re: drug addiction
The bad thing is, folks, he is addicted to Mountain Dew. He says he can do it, but every week brings the same thing. He does good for a day or two. He has not been to the dr. about his kidneys. He worries cause the day he drinks a can (yes, just one can) of MD he says his kidneys kill him. This is a bad addiction and I don't know what to do. He loves his MD. I am literally thinking of putting him into a rehab clinic.

Re: drug addiction
No addiction is good. Sorry for your husband...
The soda/pop industry is rich off of people!! I mean, people are addicted to junkfood and soda...
If he WANTS to quit, he can. He has to make the choice. I stopped drinking soda pop over 2 years ago. It was adding to my weight and just not healthy. I never drank that much of it, but had cravings all the same!! Now, rarely, I have a drink of one and it is like pure sugar! (repulsive).
I drink seltzer with lemon, flavored seltzers, water, soy milk, coffee, real 100% juice. No more soda. I feel much better, lost weight, and don't have a craving for it anymore.
I'm not a goodie goodie...I love sugar and candy and cakes...I just decided if I want to start getting healthy, soda had to go....I don't miss it or lining the pockets of Coke, Pepsi....that includes diet and caffiene free...it's all rubbish!!!
Fortunately, my son can be controlled (he likes selzer) and my dh hates soda. So no temptations. We have ginger ale in the house for tummy problems but that is it.
Good luck!!
